I can't afford to spend loads on one, I'm thinking about £20-£30, obviously it must record calories, other than that I'm not fussy.

Polar seem to be recognised as the best. I've got a Polar FT7 but it was about £70 - got it for my birthday though! I did get a really cheap one for about £15 off amazon which just had a pulse sensor on it and it was rubbish - it is in the bin! You need to get one with a chest strap. Have a look on Amazon.

The cheaper ones don't usually record calories.

    However, this one seems to:

I don't have any experience of this one myself but I was looking into HRM's before I bought my FT7 last week.

    I use this one
    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9279526/Trail/searchtext>TARGET+FINTESS.htm

    £29.99

It records calories, allows to set a target heart rate zone, has several different modes for different types of exercise, it's good value for money and seems quite accurate. I've logged the calories it says I burn (after taking off an amount for "background calories - those i would have burnt even if i had just sat on my bum and done nothing), and so far my loss results are in the region of what I am expecting, so it seems to be in the right ball-park (to use a cliche).

Honestly - I did loads of research before I bought one.

To be accurate it needs to have a watch AND a chest strap.

I wouldnt stray from Polar - they're the best in my opinion and lots of other peoples too.

I read loads of stories of people opting for cheaper ones, only to get frustrated within a few months and going for the marginally more expensive Polar.

    Incase I wasnt clear....POLAR lol

EDIT: entry level Polar here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Polar-FT2-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B003HT9W32/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327443092&sr=8-1

This is the one I got http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sigma-Onyx-Balance-Heart-Monitor/dp/B000W45GE4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1327498063&sr=8-1 and I'm happy with it, it comes with a chest strap & it records cals burned once your heart rate goes over 100 bpm & you are in stop watch mode.

Sorry just noticed it's more than you'd like to spend.

Sports Direct do a Karrimor one, with chest strap for £20. It works perfectly well, for me :)

you can get a Kelly Holmes one in Tesco, the usual price is £26 but it is selling in Tesco Direct at £17.33 at the moment. Dont know if the price is also reduced in store but you can order online and have it delivered to your local store which avoids post/packing costs. I have been using mine for two weeks and am really pleased with it, I would definately recommend it, great value for money.

I have a Polar FT60 which is fab! The base model is the FT4 and is recommended by lots of people on MFP
