Hey, Iowans. I joined MFP last month and needed some inspiration, so I signed up for RAGBRAI! I've never biked more than 20 miles at one time and have at least 30 pounds of extra "baggage" to loose, so this will be quite a challenge. Any veterans out there?

Good for you! I have never done it but would love to hear your training progress and how you do during the event.0

Ive never Ridden but I hope this year or next Ill be able to take a day or two off to ride. I cant take the whole week unfortunately.0

This is also one of my goals for the year. I've lived in Iowa my whole life and have yet to do it. I'm getting my bike "tuned" as we speak and already starting to acquire necessary items to get it done. My neighbor is an avid biker and I"m hoping to train with himduring the spring/summer months. I'm hoping to do Ragbrai for just a day or two.0

That's great! I think if you can already ride 20 miles, with a little more time on that bike seat you will do great!
I haven't done it, never really had a desire to until recently. If I wasn't already on vacation during RAGBRAI this summer, I'd definitely do a couple of days!0 -
I have been on Ragbrai three times. First time was when I was 15 yrs old, and was the 10th ragbrai... I rode 85 miles that day, without any training. Since then, I've ridden three to four days on the ride, and it was one of the most fun, best experiences I have had.
Don't worry about not having ridden too much. I guarentee your butt and other personal parts will be sore beyond belief, and when you see the next hill you will be saying to yourself "oh, hell no", but you will be able to do it and you will have a lot of fun.
I will suggest biking shorts, good gel -gloves and lots of patience.0
