I notice Fred introduced himself as an Atheist and right away blamed religion as the cause of major issues/problems in the world. I do have to disagree with him because religion is not exactly the reason or cause of all the problems this world has experienced. Personally, I believe religion has been a great tool for those in desire of power.

It is human nature to want to be in control over others, to be wealthy and to make others dependable of the ones in power. Because of the lack of education in ancient times, it was easy to control masses thru religion because of how easy it was to spread fear among the people with the idea that the "creator, whoever it would be, would punish them if they didn't do what they were told. You have to be aware that it wasn't just one person the one using religion for this purpose, but groups of people and organizations were the ones doing it, and it took them plenty of years to get to where we are today.

Generalizing all religions as being the problem is like saying all Asians are Chinese, or hispanics are Mexicans, or all Muslims are terrorists. And about Muslims, the media now a days has done a great job to misinform people about the principles of the religion and most Americans now a days believe that terrorists acts are part of this religion's principles.

You beat me to the punch. I wanted to comment on this, but I didn't know how exactly he was using the word "religion". If he was talking about "organized" religions, well.....

George Carlin said it best about the subject. The two most deadliest questions in history: "Do you believe in God?" "No." Boom! Dead. "Do you believe in God?" "Yes..." "Do you believe in my God?" "No." Boom! Dead."

You can't argue about what staunch believers and even the Evangelical Taliban in this country try to get away with in this country. I do agree with you tho: organized religion is definitely used as a power trip. It is not so much everyone that IS a Catholic, or Christian, as it is the persons in power that make everyone else look bad.

Now, if he was talking about religion as in spirituality, and the need to connect with deity, then yes I disagree with his opinion.

I kind of agree. I feel like religion itself isn't the problem, like believing in a god or gods. I feel like the followers are the problem. Now, that's also not to say that ALL followers of ALL religions are the problem, but it's the idiotic ones that make all of the others look bad.

lesser men allow power to corrupt. because they are lesser men, they're thoughts are not pure and in the best interest of all. organized religion is a power play. with the power of "god" to compel them, they can tell themselves that its whats best for their flock, when it really hurts the people he has power over. so religion isn't to blame. the people who grab for power and allow it to corrupt are to blame.

everything in life comes down to your individual choice. you can fight "religion" or you can fight the corrupted behind the religion. i say place blame where blame lays.

The problem, in my opinion, is that all the messages have been misconstrued.

The people in power twisted the beliefs in whatever way they could to make it
most beneficial & profitable to them. Perhaps, at one time, they did it with the
people in mind, but now. Hah! I agree with the general consensus of the group.

People have taken it to that miserable level.

It is all valid in the end. We are all learning together. Everyone is either a part
of it or a spectator. All we can do is follow our heart & do what we feel is good.

    :D
