Success pictures.

I was over in the success section of MFP and found myself wondering about the people who take pictures of their whole bodies, in their skivvies, with their FACE showing and post it on the internet.

I don't understand why people do that. I would be worried that people I knew in the IRL would see those pics and connect them back to me.

I fully understand the idea behind taking pictures in the first place. It helps you see how far you have come. It helps other people gauge what they might look like at that weight etc. (I myself have taken part in a project that helps people who are getting plastic surgery gauge what they would look like at a certain height/weight/size etc.) I would just be worried that ones that were NOT anonymous could come back to haunt you.

Do you think its a good idea to post pics of your whole self (face included) on the internet on a public page when you're wearing nothing but your underwear?

Not if you ever hope to have a professional career where there is no chance of a picture of you having a staple through your belly button.

Oh, they will haunt you.I agree with the whole concept that "everything you post on the internet is permanent".
I recall when the groups first started, someone started the "MFP Underground" group and I was sent an invite. The first or second day, MFP members were posting naked pictures of themselves. All I could think was, gg, who knows how many people might have -right click, save as, c:/desktop. Besides the fact that this is an open forum accessible virtually to anyone. You don't even have to log into the forums to view the topics. Anyway, I suppose these people really don't aspire to have a professional career or some sort of dignity?

Is there a difference in taking a picture in skimpy underwear opposed to a bikini for success pictures?

This is something that has always bothered me. I've seen that a lot here--"just take a photo in a bikini, not your underwear!" Well, really, what IS the difference? To be honest, even my skimpiest bras cover more than any of my bikini tops. And some of my undies show less than my bikini bottom. So by that logic, I'd actually be showing off MORE than if I did a photo in my underwear. This just makes no sense to me. Why is one more acceptable than the other? Because underwear is still taboo?

I really hate that we live in a society where what we do online apparently defines how we'd perform at our job/career, and that everyone is judged by their photographs. Just because I hate it, though, doesn't mean it's going to cease to exist. So even though my tattoo, friends, clothing style, and places I visit have no bearing whatsoever in how I'll perform in a chosen profession, I must keep in mind that others don't feel the same as I do, and I personally would not throw those out there on the forum. My profile is private, so friends can still see, but I wouldn't make it a default photo, for sure.

I'm not even sure if the "profession" matters. I would personally be humiliated if a coworker or customer saw a pic of me (that was identifiable as me) in my panties or bikini showcasing my before and after fat whether I was a grocery store cashier, waitress or CEO of a corporation.

Fair enough. That's personal to you, though. Some people are completely comfortable "showing it all."

Personally, nudity doesn't offend me in any way whatsoever. I don't understand why nudity is censored. Hell, most of my female friends won't even let their boyfriends/husbands watch movies that have "nudity" listed next to the rating, because they're horribly insecure with their own bodies don't want their guys seeing boobs. *insert eye-rolling here* I understand for health reasons why nudity is a no-no in public, though.

I always assume that anything I post can be seen by my grandmother. This means I don't post naked pics. Everything on the internet is public and open to your bosses, family, and everyone else.

I would never post pics of me naked (or partially so) on here.

Think I side with Kimmy. At least for me I know I'll never really be in a position where it would cause me embarrassment. I spent years as a comic saying outlandish stuff onstage, I kind of can't help but reveal embarrassing things about me for laughs. So while I'm more open online than is probably smart I just feel like I'd rather be me. If someone wants to judge me fine. Most people who would really make an issue of it have a sex basement they don't tell anyone about anyway. We're all a little...off and the people who strenuously deny that fact are the sickest of all.

Shoot if I was in (strike that, WHEN I'm in) better shape you better believe there are going to be pics. I've worked hard and I'm not ashamed to show it off. I'm proud of what I've accomplished. Anyone who wants to come to me saying "Ooh I can see parts of your stomach!" like it's weird or in some way negative has hang-ups that I can't really understand or side with. I think it's their problem.

We're people. We have bodies. Some folks need to grow up about that fact.(not directed at any of you of course)

Posing in my underwear would be tame compared to some pictures ive taken in the past. I dont see no problem with it,I dont care if someone sees me naked, underwear, whatever. I have no plans to run for president and wouldnt care if a co worker found one of my pictures.

I don't have many comprimising pictures, but if any prospective employer ever say my FB page, pictures in my undies would be my last problem.

I have no problem with nudity. Women in my gym locker room walk around naked and I don't care. We get naked to go shower and change. Fact of life. I've seen topless and almost nude sun bathers too - again, doesn't bother me.

I have no problem wearing a bikini on a public beach or pool etc. It's minimal coverage to sunbath even though now I find I seek shade more frequently than my younger years and slather on the sunblock as opposed to the oil of my youth.

I walk around my house naked, half naked, in my underwear etc.

I will not post full view pictures of myself in my underwear/bikini online for strangers to view because I have no good reason to do so. Would I post a bikini shot from vacation on FB? Yes - but those people know me in person. They aren't strangers. For me: It's got nothing to do with shame, and everything to do with privacy.

I wonder if at some point it wont be a matter of getting over it, but that most people just wont care, because everyone seems to put everything and anything out there. OR there will be a hardcore rejection to all of this.

There was a day awhile back (snarky fat chicks in bikinis day) to get a bunch of people to post pics of themselves in bikinis regardless of their appearance. I joined in..why not have a fun, confidence boosting day to celebrate our bodies? I didn't have a bikini for obvious reasons so like many other women that day i posted a bra and underwear pic. I don't think most people could tell it wasn't even a swim suit.

I was however slightly surprised to google my username and find my half-naked pic come up as the first result. Honestly though, I don't care. I don't care if people see my stomach, legs and arms. I showed my boss the progress pics on my profile, my parents have seen it, it's not really a big deal to me and it has done a lot for my confidence to post a pic of myself looking pretty gross and feeling liberated about it. It's actually still in my pics on here.

How is a pic of my on the internet any different than a random doctor or nurse seeing me half-naked or someone at a beach or pool?

It's interesting to think about. It depends on who will "win out". Puritans or Free Thinkers. I know who I'm rooting for. And the Puritans will have their work cut out for them. See the marketing guys realized "sex sells" and now it's kind of silly to think we'll go back to arresting women for showing elbow. The genie's out of the bottle. The most the general public has ever cared about politics is when Clinton was caught. It's probably healthiest as a society if we just all admit that yes, we do have an interest in sex and it's not the end of the world.

And before the calls for "modesty" go out can I just say now that you can be as modest as you like, whatever is comfortable for you. But you have no right to tell someone else how to dress. This is not the Middle East and you are not the Taliban. We fight for freedom in the civilized world, not oppression.

I would disagree with that. Not to put fbmandy on the spot but what she did could be considered healthy. She posted a realistic picture of herself to build confidence, for herself. I am not saying it is unhealthy at all to post pictures of yourself. I am questioning if it is wise to post them when you can be identified in them because of how you might be judged in the workplace or in some other real life area. As I said in my OP I have myself taken pics as well, but none with my face because I didn’t want them to come back on me. My previous job I managed a lot of people including men, for myself I wouldn’t want that coming out in the workplace.
There is a site that I love called Shape of a mother where people post pictures of themselves to show what people really look like, especially after having a baby, to me that is a very healthy thing to do and it helps other women. I personally would not show my face on a site like that either though.

But the way our society is right now, I would not say that is exactly healthy. Sex might sell, but what they are usually selling is something that is completely unrealistic. Women have a very hard maintaining realistic body images and that in itself is oppression. But people getting to a place where they are comfortable with themselves in a realistic way is, I agree, is very good.

If you are personally not worried, which clearly you are not if you're showing your boss, then I don't think its anything different. lol I could never do that. I think all of my bosses have been men though. I've had a few suggest that I should show them what I look like in my underwear but that was about where it ended lol So I guess from my experiences in a dysfunctional work environment, a picture like that would just add to it in a negative way.

Lol, that's my point exactly! Most women's swimwear IS about the same, sometimes more or less, than underwear. I still fail to see how one is considered "better" than the other, by some people. I truly honestly know women who, if they saw your photo and thought they were seeing a bikini, would say "oh great job!" but the second you said "thanks, it's actually my undies" they'd probably start slinging insults at you. It's so insane!

I know the whole body image thing is a hard issue to deal with. I've been fat, sickly skinny, average weight...been through all the stages. I can always find something "wrong" with myself. Does the unrealistic "skinny" supermodel being replicated in every single women's magazine bother me? Yes and no. Yes, because I like diversity...especially diversity in people. I feel like I see the same thing page after page after page. It doesn't bother me, though, in the sense that, hey, it's a reflection of what the readers pay to see, so it's my choice to read it or not. But really, who is to blame for the fact that what they're selling is "unrealistic?" If women in general wanted that image of the unrealistic "skinny' supermodel to go away, then there's an easy solution: stop buying into it. Stop buying the fashion mags that showcase nothing but 90 lb. models. Stop buying the designer clothes that tell us that their standard of beauty is the ONLY standard of beauty. START complaining. START writing in that what they're selling is unhealthy in terms of weight and nutrition. START checking out magazines that offer more diversity in their models and products. START supporting campaigns that are for EVERYONE, not just heroin-chic sheeps. Companies like Dove, for example, have an entire campaign online for promoting healthy body images for young girls and women, and their spokespeople, models, and everyday stories reflect that of healthy people.

Okay, I went a little rant-crazy, there. My bad.

Kimmy makes a great point and I'd like to piggyback off it if I could.

Like you say you work with men who act inappropriately in the work place. Completely out of line behavior. Why should you have to adjust your behavior because of their lack of propriety? Yes of course, because they're the boss, I get that. But sometimes people like to fight back against those who wrongly oppress them (I know, big talk).

Instead of saying "Well people are going to judge me and think poorly of me if they see me in my underwear" why not think "Hey freaks! You can tell me I look good or you can p!ss up a rope! I ain't got time for whatever misogyny you want to throw at me. I'm my own woman and I'll dress how I like and post pics of what I like."

It's the difference between standing up for what you want and giving in to those who would seek to tear you down.

(again I know, big dramatic talk for underwear pics. But I think I'm making a larger point)

  • I don't think it's limited to something you post on the internet. It's technology as a whole. I have taken a risque picture of myself (ok, maybe two or three or ten) for a bf and videotaped my sexcapades with my then husband. Now granted, I'm not Pamela Anderson, but people break-up and people get divorced, and you never know where these pics/tapes may end up.

I take responsibility for anything I've posted on the net and do so knowing full well that it's "permanent" and won't embarrass my myself or my kids.

I worry way more about what I've done with people that I loved, trusted, and that I assumed knew was only for their eyes.

With teenage sons that I know look at porn sites (would it really hurt them to clear the history on the laptop?), lots of friends that watch porn, and a vindictive ex-bf. I am always afraid that someone I know will come across one of the pictures/tapes.

Will it make me think next time I might take a pic from my cell phone for a guy I'm with? Yes. But I will probably still do it.

^Yeah there comes a point where you just have to decide for yourself if you're going to live in fear at what might happen or if you're going to do what you want. And honestly both sides are valid choices. I think this is a very personal choice, I know I won't ever be in a position where pics here would cause me any grief. Shoot I did a play in college where I had to strip down to my boxers on stage. So if somebody is really desperate to find dirt on me, it's out there. But I don't want to limit myself because of other people's hang ups. Yes, under my clothes I am in fact naked.
