Sorry just had to say this and it doesn't really "fit" anywhere else.
So I just got into a debate with a pseudo-vegan in the "cheese makes your thighs" something or other thread. He came into the thread with a lot of big talk about how meat consumption = heart disease and how he and his vegan friends laugh and compare meat eaters to drug addicts.
I challenged him and the minute his logic fell apart it was all "Good luck on your journey and I wish everyone success in whatever they choose to do." :explode:
That's why I like you guys and structured debate in general. People have the courage of their convictions. You don't back down from something just to look like a "nice guy".
I have much more respect for a person who will stand by their words instead of trying to weasel out. Even to those of you I disagree with completely at least you stand up for what you believe and say!
So.. thank you debate group!

I saw that, and it made me chuckle too. :laugh:0

Hehehe, after I was done with him he actually printed an apology and retraction. I felt bad so I of course made nice.
But if you could see me I've got a wicked grin on my face!
:devil:0 -
All too often that particular rhetorical ploy (ok now I'll be nice and leave) is just used to set themselves up so that they can play the victim later. While it may or may not be polite depending on one's interpretation, it's entirely irrational--and perhaps therefore offensive.0
-
Taking your ball and going home is the ultimate passive aggressive **** you. I have little patience for that behavior.0
-
As puerile as that is I still find that better than the "Well fine. Go eat a big juicy steak but don't cry to me when your heart explodes. I'm done with this thread and this whole site. You people are all the same..." hair flipping, foot stomping, storm off tantrum.0
-
Yeah tantrums and storming off are really the worst. Especially since time and time again they just come back anyway. "I am deleting my account I hate you people!!!" "Hey can you re-add me?"0
-
The only time I run off on debates is when the other person stoops to name-calling or starts making absurdly irrational arguments laden with emotion. By then, it's just a downhill spiral so I like to get off the ride while the gettin's good.
I usually take my opponent's spiral into the absurd as victory for me too. Basically, "I win, bye now"0 -
That's a good point Elizabeth. At some point you do just have to let the argument end, especially if it's not ground in real terms and at least respectful enough that you don't want to rip their heads off.
Listen I know I can be snarky. Snarky is funny. And I won't get all up in arms if you don't accuse me of putting words in your mouth for things you did in fact say. Remember it's the internet. That *kitten*'s still a few pages back! I think some people are very used to arguing in real life and being able to say "I didn't say that!" when they in fact did. That's why I like online debating. It's all right there for everyone to see.0 -
I think that
A: People are at a loss when they debate people with different views because when they all sit around with their friends, they just trash the other side without ever being confronted. You don't exactly sharpen your wit debating people you agree with.
B: Peope who get all of their opinions from one source, whether it an instituition, church, or politically slanted new channel like FOX/MSNBC get crushed once they get into the real world of debate. Suddenly their perfectly crafted little scenario of how they are just going to tell everyone how it is falls apart because they are now facing a........thinker (gasp). People who possess critical thinking skills will almost always walk away from the debate the clear winner since no matter how educated or how articulate the other is, without the source of their knowledge, rather it be a book, O'Reilly, or Olbermann there to help them, they are lost.
C: PC has killed honest debate.0 -

Same here!
I don't debate people in person often. This is partially because I like to keep my inner circle as drama-free as humanly possible to ensure I don't give my already weak heart any more stress than necessary. I do mean this seriously, not sarcastically. Person to person debate can end up causing a ****storm that I don't feel like dealing with most of the time and stress does make my heart not behave well.0 -

Oh I love to watch a good hair flip! "Im out of here!"0 -

Would you guys believe me if I told you I'm one of the most non-confrontational people you could imagine? Because I am.0 -
LOL I really love this group..... But some of the people on the forums I can almost see the tantrums when people dont agree :flowerforyou:0

Would you guys believe me if I told you I'm one of the most non-confrontational people you could imagine? Because I am.
I'm only confrontational when I can do so while being relatively asynchronous about it. It's easier in a chat room or internet forum to just look back at the record and say, "uh..no really did say that and here's why you're wrong." In person I'm terrible at that. I can't remember exact phrasing at all, and I just want everything taped so I can rewind; as annoying as it is to quote out someone 5 times in a forum response, it's way harder to do in real life--for me. Text has the disadvantage not having any non-verbal communication or tonal (with regard to one's literal voice) references.0 -

I would indeed believe it! I'm the same way. I LOVE debating...always have, and probably always will. But I don't like to cause drama. Plus, most of the people I know in person suck at debating, and either get so flustered and defensive and/or angry, or they get all passive-aggressive on me and say "yeah, okay, I guess..." while harboring hatred for me. :laugh:0 -
I got what I thought was a good education in debating in public forums during the 2007-8 election campaign, both the primary and general elections. Up until then, I had spent most of my time on like-minded websites, where you can develop an insular outlook.
It wasn't enough to go into a public forum and just start throwing out general criticisms and making blanket statements. First of all, those on the other side were using the exact same arguments and usually similar if not exact same language (esp when criticizing the other side). Often the discussions became an unending circle of insult-trading.
But I also ran into people who had valid arguments or who had their own thought-out ideas, strong convictions, etc. The same general statements and language that sounded eloquent on Daily Kos or My DD or other like sites didn't work so well outside of the "echo chamber". So you had to come prepared with facts, logic and consistency if you wanted to be taken seriously. And, over time, I learned to have a better understanding of the opinions and reasoning of those who opposed my opinions. While I still read a lot of articles on more liberal sites, I rarely participate in the discussions anymore. I have never been big on ideological orthodoxy.
Those forums don't really exist anymore, although there are many more opportunities to express opinions. 90% of comments consist of various forms of "Obama is a socialist" and it's impossible to have anything resembling an intelligent discussion --hard to fight a war of wits against an unarmed opponent. Things have become so polarized that there is almost no common ground, and the issues are so complex that almost no one understands them enough to do anything more than parrot talking points and cliches.0 -

For about 6 months I regularly debated people on Indy's FOX 59 FB page. Same people....everyday....saying the same things.0 -
A lot of what I know, about debate and religion and just general facts about life I've picked up from the James Randi Educational Forum. Those people are no joke! You gotta bring your A game in that place. It's a forum for skeptics so there is a certain bias at play you might say. The main focus is debunking things like 9/11 myths and ghost sightings, bigfoot and paranormal claims. But there's also a political segment of the forum where things get brutal. It's SUPPOSED to be civilized debate but when you're arguing with people who say the reason no one's every seen a dead sasquatch is because they bury their dead (and apparently their feces) it tends to get pretty snarky.
So you can blame them for me being the way I am. Good site though!0 -

Just because you never habe seen a sasquatch doesn't mean they don't exist.0 -

Adrian! No bigfeet!
I swear if I'm on the elliptical one morning and see you on that Bigfoot Hunter show on Animal Planet (comes on right before Orangutan Island starts. Love them monkeys) I will... block you! Take that!0 -

Whatever man. My theory is that people do see Bigfoot, but it's the ghost of a Gigantopithicus.0 -

Oh well you didn't say that. Of course that's fine.
I have seen people attempt to seriously argue that sasquatch have the ability to turn invisible. It haunts me.0 -
I probably have an immature idea of what debate is, but the actual structure of any particular debate doesn't seem that hard, A game or not. Points of contention almost always seem to center around: veracity, legitimacy of evidence, and the interpretation of that evidence.
Do aliens exist? That really depends on how much we trust the evidence that the the truth is out there, so to speak.
Now if someone wants to pile their rhetorical bs into an argument, buckle up. I'll happily shred it to pieces.0 -

OI!!! No discriminating against the pedi-exceptional! I get enough of that in shoe shops :laugh:0 -

 Very sensible of you, Brett! I'm a US ladies 11 (European 42), and more often than not, when I visit a shoe shop and ask for that size, they look at me as if I *am* a sasquatch!0 -
I disagree with all of you.

Haha, Surprise! Me too. I don't spend much time on there anymore but I'm pretty sure I became a 'regular' there for awhile.0
