Good Afternoon!

I am don't exactly fit into the description completely but I'm close enough. I am a 34 year old wife and mother of 2. I work full time outside the home and I also run a small business from home in my "spare time". that's funny because spare time seems to be what I lack these days.

Anyways - I was diagnosed with Graves Disease around 2004. Originally I was severely Hyper Active Thyroid and dropped about 100 lbs in less than a year. Just prior to the weight loss I had mysteriously gained a larger amount of weight than I was accustom to. I always thought it was just due to the birth of my daughter. Years later we discover that I first suffered from some hypothyroidism prior to that. I was very sick and almost to the point of dying at the young age of 26. Finally I found the right doctor to help me out and he had me put in for a total thyroidectomy in Feb 2007. Although that surgery saved my life and I'm grateful for it - I am also frustrated at the same time.

The surgeon continued to treat me after the surgery and unfortunately couldn't seem to get my med's where they needed to be. So I stayed Hypo Active for a very long time. I have since gained about 100 lbs since having the surgery and I'm really struggling to lose the weight. It is frustrating being on a weight roller coaster.

So I'm giving this another try and I am hoping to lose at least 60 lbs. It a large goal to reach but I'm just going to take it one step at a time!

Hi Im new here too : ) I was diagnosed nearlly a year ago its a long story which involves me going private but thankfully here i am now finally on medication and still increasing every 8 weeks. I am on 150mg of levothyroxine and feel i need another increase. Last year i felt so ill but now i feel the medication is working, but very slowly. I am 3 stone heavier than what i normally due to putting the weight on in pregnancy 2 years ago. I have been unable to lose any weight. I have been on many diets and have been excersisng upto 6-7 classes a week to still hover around the weight i am today. I have lost huge amounts in the past with diet and excersise and even cycled 10 miles on a stationary bike while pregnant so i feel confident that i have the will power to achieve weight loss. But, this thyroid condition has made me so miserable, i hate it. I am still watching what i eat and still do some exersise but im more relaxed and treat mysefl at weekends. When i am on my correct dose i know i will be more dedicated to trying to lose weight. I have lost 4lb in 3 weeks since starting this site but again, this is quite normal so im not holding my breath just yet. If i manage to get below 15 stone then i know the medication may be on its way to sorting my symtoms out. We'll see. x
  • Hi - new as of yesterday
Always been seen as the bigger one in the family and gradually put on weight until hit 17st 10 years ago. then managed to lose 7st over 2 years - maintained for 2 years but then it started increasing despite my best efforts until i'm now not far off 17st again. I was diagnosed low thyroid 18mths ago and have pushed and pushed my gp to increase thyroxine to the current 100mg daily but the weight's only recently started to stay the same. Hopefully it'll now start reducing - waiting on some more blood test results though so may get an increase

Been there done that with thyroid. Hang in there!
I can tell you that the best thing I ever did was MOVE...you have to exercise and walk everyday. It is not easy, but what I did was weight lifting (5-10lb weights) & walking. The weight did come off. I was doing really well with it til I got sick with pneumonia & a heart problem. Now I have regained all weight back plus more. So now that I am better health wise I am starting over and doing pretty good.
Keep at it and counting calories will also help!

Hi Cesmith5, is that what your gp told you or do you have the results in figures yourself? My gp was telling me for years that im fine and that my tsh was normal (long story but he's fantastic now). I thought i was going mad, my tsh at that point was 5.9. You probably know all this but some people will need their tsh to be really low around a 1 or under and their t4 right at the top of the range to feel better.

My tsh is supresed at the moment (0.06) but as i am still symtomatic (although im feeling a lot better than last year) my doctor agreed to increase my dose a few weeks ago by 25mg with strict instructions to watch out for signes of being over medicated,, to be honest i have'nt felt any different.

The labs here wont test t4 every time a gp requests it, they only test it once every 5 months for a patient...dont ask!!! The reason my gp increased my meds was based on the fact i was still symptomatic and that my t4 was around 11 a few months before.
I have had another blood test yesterday with the hope that my t4 will be tested now, and hopefully i will be able to increase to 175mg...fingers crossed.

It's enoughto battle with our thyroids what with all the symtoms and getting medication right, im 35yrs now i hope to god i will be soretd by the time im 40yrs. Took me 5 years to get a diagnosis!!!

I love this site though, it's making me more aware of what i eat (and what i snack on), so if anything at least i can aim to eat more healthier good luck to you all : ) xx

Hi, it's Sunday 02/05/12, and I have just joined this group. I have been diagnosed with a number of auto-immune conditions and the main one is hypothyroidism. I am on 112 mcg of Synthroid and trying my best to use supplements for everything else I have going on and stay away from prescriptions but we shall see how this goes.

I hope this group is set up for people of like conditions to share experiences (good and bad) to help us move towards living a more balanced life.
  • Hi,
I am new here too and so happy to find a group of people who just understand. I have been diagnosed for approximately 9 years now although it took a long time and another continent before I found out why I was feeling so ill. I try to look after myself go to the gym regularly and eat healthily but have put weight on. Am being proactive and have hired a PT to try and direct me how to shift the weight and went to my GP yesterday to get my meds increased from 125mg to 150mg with a blood test pending. I am feeling very tired, emotional, angry and not sleeping on a night so I hope this increase helps. I am fed up of being told that my results are within normal range and will continue to argue that I am an individual who knows when my body is not right and not some lab rat who's results fit in within some guidelines. I don't think that people who do not suffer with the condition appreciate how it affects you as an individual and I seem unable to find the words to explain how it impacts on me and my life. Would love to make new friends who I don't have to explain to xxx

    Hi all
Just posted this on another group so sorry if you have already read it : )
I went to see my gp yesterday to find out my blood results and was hoping for an increase in levothyroxine and was told my levels are now over the ranges and i am hyper and overmedicated!
I am convinced i am not converting t4 into t3 as i am still symptomatic and very much hypo(even my body temp is low and pulse rate low...makes no sense).
My gp is lovely and said he doesnt know what the answer is but will help me find a specialist ...ive decided to see Dr Skinner in Birmigham now with the hope of starting on a natural thyroid med or t3 etc which i cant get where i live.
Ive been symptomatic for 6 years and only diagnosed last year, i cant wait any longer to get back to being a healthy 30 something woman any more.
Ive ordered a ft3 test pack from a private company, the results of that will tell me if im not converting properlly as before i started levo my ft3 was great, top end of the range ( was just my low ft4 and high tsh that was showing i was hypo) so if my ft3 is lower than before then i would assume my body is storing the t4 and the t3 isnt getting any.
    So confusing.
I had hoped i was on my way to getting better and was hoping to be able to lose the 3 stone ive put on, but looks like i wont be able to now until things are sorted.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation before?
    xx
  • My area won't do all the tests so I only get a partial result and the gp says it's "in range so ok" - but, weight won't shift and body temp is v.cold to touch. Having said that - did get an increase in meds 3 months ago which has helped and GP is doing some more tests on the no-weight-loss so at least he's listening. I've got a lot going on over the next few months but am planning to have some private tests later in the year once I've got through that.
Definitely feel like I know more about thyroid issues than my GP!

Hi! Another newish member. I'm 33, been struggling with doctors over my thyroid for something like 5 years now. I started out as subclinical, but treatment made me feel leaps and bounds better. So frustrating when everything comes up "normal" and you feel like crap, cold all the time and listless. All I can say is you must be your own advocate. Most doctors out there know next to nothing about thyroid problems, how to treat them, and the side effects of treatment!
Some useful resources I have found are the books by Mary J Shomon, and stopthethyroidmaddness.com (don't know if this is still up and running or not.). I bounced through 8 different doctors, I think. None would listen to me! The doctor I have right now has literally saved my life! It's been a long process, but worth finding a doctor who listens to me when I say I don't feel good!
  • Hi,
Having read through some of the stories on here they are all too familiar. I have been diagnosed for almost 10 years now and don't seem to be any better now than I was then. I have recently been to my docs for an increase in my meds from 125mg to 150mg, which he has done on the provision I have a blood test and we will discuss the results. Basically if the results come back within normal I will end up having another argument about not being a lab rat and having a normal range when I know how my body feels. I am going to ask to be referred to an endocrinologist as I want all my system checking including adrenal function and pitutary gland.
I am 20lbs plus over weight, vegetarian eating really healthy and exercise 12-15 hours per week. I have hired a trainer in desperation to try and lose the weight. Last week I was poorly and did no exercise, barely ate and managed to put on 6lbs, this is not normal!!!
So many GP's know so little about the condition and its implications on our bodies and only have a chart to refer to. All I can say is I am still trying to figure it all out and get frustrated at putting in the effort and seeing little to no results.

  • Try gluten free diet, works for my friend. I have Hoshimoto and i have tried gluten free diet and i feel so much better.
  • I Also go to www.stopthethyroidmaddness.com it has help me. i bought the book, i changed my med to Armor thyroid, which is so much better for me and i feel great... i chew the meds instead of swallowing. i used to be on synthyroid for years and felt terrible. thanks to the book i changed my diet and meds, i just changed this past christmas and feel great so far.... also gluten free.

I was diagnosed hypothyroid 5 years ago. Lately I have been off my meds and very inconsistent the last year and I can see and feel it. Been so busy going back to school that I haven't taken care of myself as well as usual. Getting back on track is my priority right now as I get ready to graduate.

The last few weeks since joining this site I have lost a few pounds, gained it back, lost a few pounds... but overall I am eating better with less carbs and exercising way more than I was before. That's a success in itself. I know the weight will come off easier once my meds are right.

I'm searching for a new doctor, does anyone have suggestions on good questions to ask - specifically for hypothyroid help?

So happy to find a support group for this here!

New here too. Just found out last week that I had an underactive thyroid after years of battling symptoms. Thankfully I found a doc that would listen and finally diagnosed me. I'm glad to know my symptoms weren't just in my head. Started meds this week. I'm glad to know there was a group with like individuals battling the same issues.

Thanks for the info/website. Just diagnosed last week. Right now I'm just glad to know the symptoms weren't "all in my head".

No need, I get it. You and all he others on this thyroid hel ride are not alone. It takes a shift in the way we deal with things that takes a while to get. Be vigilant in your search for the right dosages. Make sure they test your free T3 and cortisol. Get the supplement specific to optimize everything. Check out dr mark Hyman on youtube and this article http://thyroid.about.com/od/loseweightsuccessfully/a/weight-loss-diet.htm

I have an underactive thyroid. When I turned 31, I weighed 230 lbs and decided to start dieting. I couldn't lose a thing! and even gained 10 lbs! My doctor tested my TSH and put me on synthroid, but I still couldn't lose weight. Honestly, I wasn't trying hard enough. I still ate out, didn't exercise (except for the occassional dog walk) and carbs were a big part of our diet.

I decided this year to really put my nose to the grind stone. I started taking my meds on a regular basis, started walking the dog at least three times a week, and cut our bread, pasta, and potatoes.

Now, I have lost six lbs in 3 weeks! Whooo hooo! but I am gonna need support to keep it going.
