Just starting out biking to lose weight. I've ridden about 36 miles so far this month. Had a couple of nice weather days when I was able to ride 10 miles. Today looks to be another. It's a nice ride from my house down the bay front then along a country road that takes me back out to the bay at another point.

Bought some bike shorts & gloves last night online. Next purchase will be a helmet for when I'm ready to brave the Farm to Market & Texas highways.

Congrats on the bike shorts and gloves, they can make time in the saddle a lot more comfortable! A helmet is a must, too many stupid people out there!

    Welcome!

We have been lucky with the weather around here this winter, not terribly cold or rainy. But it is definitely a busier time of year with work in the contest between work and cycling. So work has been winning the last week or so, but fortunately as a city dweller, I can take advantage of the bike sharing service to get around even when I can't get out for a ride. The share bikes are big and heavy and bombproof and so much more "rewarding" in a calorie burning sense. And the work has been pretty great this week. I am lucky enough to be part of the lighting crew on a tv show at the White House, and yesterday I was standing about 6 feet away when Barack Obama asked Mick Jagger for his autograph on a lyrics sheet. It's the coolest thing I've ever seen at work, for sure. It was very surreal. Back today for more rehearsals and the performance tonight and then we load it all out, finishing around 2 or 3 in the morning. I will go back to my "regular" job at the children's theater tomorrow at 9 am. I will be tired, but it is totally worth it. It would help if someone could remind me that I think that when I am riding one of those big heavy bikes home with 20 lbs of tools and gear in a back pack at 3 am...

I got my bike back together! The parts of the hub that are bad are still bad, but it should last a week until the new parts arrive!!

I opened my Shimano Alfine 8-Speed to service it, clean and lube it, but when I got it open, I found that there were a ton of metal flakes everywhere, NOT good. I had to tear the whole thing down to find the bad bits....

This is the pile of parts I started with today.

This is the hub all back together getting ready for it's oil bath.

Here are the six badly worn shafts that caused all the trouble....

Unfortunately Mr. Shimano does not sell just that part, so I have to buy a major component that costs about $135, instead of six little shafts..... sucks. I hope to get the parts in this week and swap things out so I'm good to go for another year at least. I'll be doing the oil bath every couple of months to try to make the new parts last longer.

I'm just glad to be back doing deliveries via the bike and trailer!

    Cheers!

I don't know, but I know they do photo ops with all the different performers and the president and first lady before the show.

No riding for me today - the head cold hit the lets say "more productive" phase today - so Inspired by Stu, I thought I'd spend a little quality "workshop time" and give the road bike a bit of a fettle. I've had a few problems with the front chainring "swinging" a little - so, in preparation, I gave the bike the full hot soapy water treatment, then removed the chain, and dropped it into my chain-cleaner bottle (a 2L PET bottle of Derv!) Gave it a shake, set aside, then removed the chainset.

It's a old Shimano FC-R700 - basically, Ultegra level, before Ultegra had it's own compact chainsets. The Original rings were apparently made of some form of Japanese Cheese, and lasted under 3000 miles, before they wore into something closely resembling the escape wheel from a town hall clock. So - it's currently wearing a pair of Specialities TA 7075 machine cut rings instead. They may not shift quite as well as the Shimano Jobs, but they've done 14,000 miles with a 300+lb rider on them, and are still workable. Apart from a slight bend in a couple of the teeth that is. Anyway - I removed the rings from the spider, placed them on a plate-glass sheet (to provide a completely flat reference level), and marked the offending teeth. Fortunately, it was just the teeth that had moved slightly, rather than the ring itself, so a little gentle persuasion in the shop vice, and a quick dress up with a file, and they're good enough to see me through 'till summer at least.

And while the chain was off, it seemed like a good time to clean all the rest of the geartrain - the rear and front mech, cleaned up pretty easily, but the cassette was a different story - ended up with the cogs soaking in more derv for a hour or so, while I polished the rest of the bike up and cleaned the wheels. After their soak, a quick scrub with a old toothbrush and a rinse under the hot tap had it gleaming again. Spray with WD40 to prevent rusting up, and time to bolt everything back together again.

Was a real luxury to take a few hours out to do a thorough cleanup and fettle on the bike, it looks great again, and I can hardly wait to get back out there and get it filthy again

My parts came in, so tomorrow I'll tear the hub down again and put the new parts in!!

I've passed 500Km for the year, yeah I know people who do that much in a week, but for me all except the first 120 Km have been doing deliveries around Tokyo with the trailer in tow, that should count for something

I had to go to the hospital to get the results of my scan last week, they found a lump under my arm..... :frown:

Turns out they think it is benign

To celebrate I took the looooong way home and got a good hour of cycling in this morning.

I just finished my redo of day 1 week 5 of C25K, I upped my running pace to 6 mph and my walking to 3.5 mph, let me tell you, that was a killer workout for this old fat guy

    5 minute warm-up
    Run 5 minutes
    Walk 2 minutes
    Run 4 minutes
    Walk 2 minute
    Run 5 minutes
    Walk 2 minutes
    Run 4 minutes
    Cool down 5 minutes

Shower, some lunch, then I'm off to work!

This morning's commute to work I tried to keep my cadence above 80 and as close to 90 as I could. My average cadence ended up being 76 which I think was a result in part in having to stop at stop lights and slow my cadence as I approach it and come to a stop. My calories burned were up from yesterdays ride.

Yesterday's data for commute in to work: (I lose the GPS going thru a tunnel under the airport runways near my office...so it cuts a bit of the distance off)

    Distance: 6.05 miles
    Avg spd: 11.2 mph
    Time: 32:17
    Avg HR: 131
    Avg Cadence: 70
    Calories: 520

    Todays data for my commute:
    Distance: 6.01 miles
    Avg spd: 11.3 mph
    Time: 31:50
    Avg HR: 133
    Avg Cadence: 76
    Calories: 815

Would appear that the increase in cadence has a pretty big effect on calories burned....

You really should try to up your cadence, can you see what it is while you are riding? I try for 100 to 110, spinning is the most efficient way to ride, but it takes practice. I used to ride with a guy who was on the Olympic track team, they only have one gear, so they have to be able to spin like a top! He would get on me about it, and make me shift down, then keep my speed up. Grinding slowly puts a lot more stress on your knees etc, so you have be be careful. Shift to a lower gear and spin spin spin!

My commute to and from work today were great. I really focused as much as I could on increasing my cadence.

Especially proud of my ride home as my average cadence was 83 and my HR Avg was 137.
