I've gotten into this really horrible habit over the last 2-3 days. I keep stuffing myself with vegan junk food. I'm doing 30DS and staying within my calorie allowance but the food I'm eating has no nutritional value. It's causing me to bloat and I can really see it. I'm can't help it either! It's like I have no control over myself. Its scary because this is the situation I was in when I first realized I needed to lose weight, except I wasn't vegan then. Once I get on this crappy eating frenzy It's so hard to stop. I feel like I'm going backwards!

Have you ever used a frozen banana to make "soft serve"? Toss it into a food processor with a tiny bit of milk and it will eventually become the exact consistency and texture of soft serve ice cream. Awesome low-cal snack that tastes like you're pigging out.

^ He has a good idea.

Do you drink enough water? Or take daily vitamins? Get enough protein?

Thank you for that post, I too was doing the same. I had a terrible habit of snacking after 4pm. During the past couple of day I've increased my water intake, took my vitamins consistently and today I said no to the spice bun.... I didn't crave it....imagine that. Thanks again! I would not have put them together.

I just ate celery, carrot sticks and vegan chikn strips with vegan ranch and baba ghanoush, cracker jack, triscuits, homemade pita bread pizza and delicious beer.

We call it hockey season around here. :)

    See you at the gym!

    Black bean brownies.

    Celery will help with bloat.

Sounds great I have to try this. Although milk and vegan don't really work, has anyone tried this with almond, soy, or coconut milk? Which offers the best taste?

I make the vegan banana ice cream with just enough almond milk (and a dash of vanilla extract) to get the creamy consistency, so yes, it's a great combo, but only a little so it doesn't get too thin.

Personally, I love coconut milk, then almond milk. I usually get the unsweetened kind.
  • I like the rice milk. Its made with brown rice and is the closest I've found to real <fat-free> milk.

I still eat too much junk food myself, though I do get plenty of veggies. I'd like to be a healthy vegan, though. Just watched Forks Over Knives and it's motivating me to improve.

air popped corn sprinkled with lime juice and smothered in nutritional yeast! Sooo good! Sorry, i know you're trying to not snack, lol. this is easy on the calories and is nutritional though. what vegan doesn't need a little more b12 Right?
  • Hi! I am trying to break the same habit. I have found that drinking hot tea (preferably organic decaf green tea or slimming tea) or guzzling water really helps when I get these urges to mindlessly munch! However, personally try to go for the low calorie option. If you really need to eat, try some pop corn (unbuttered of course). Hope this helps!

I get like this, too! Have you read any of Doug Lisle's and a (I think) mc Dougall's stuff on addictive foods or why we choose crap food even when we totally know better?

I like to keep a HUGE pot of veg soup, something really flavorful, in the fridge for "snack attacks". It takes a minute or two to heat up and is so good that it can really help my snacky mood. I try to make soups that don't have potatoes, corn or beans, so (calorie-wise) I can go back for seconds if need-be (or THIRDS!!). Try to make it full of greens so you get lots of nutrition from it.
I got the idea from ages ago when I was on weight watchers....they have a 1 point soup that has cabbage and swiss chard (plus a ton of veggies), but I changed it up to include kale, and use a jar of tomatoes. It's SO good! One time I did some turnips in it, too.

I also like to have a cup of hot tea and some peanut butter toast (no sugar/no added oil/no added salt pb, whole grain bread) or apples. I swear, when I first was working thru my cravings I probably ate my weight in apples and veg soup!! ha ha! I go light on pb and bread, but if you can afford the calories, it will help you.

The only way to break your cravings is to push past them. Every time you give in you're reinforcing them. If you can get thru about three days w/o the snacks fueling your cravings, it will get easier and you'll come to crave the things your body REALLY needs. You can do it!!

Dr. Fuhrman calls it toxic hunger, that eating junk causes your body to have cravings, but that eating high nutrient food will stop the cravings. The veggie soup and hot tea sounds like a great idea. I'm going to have to make some soup myself!
Sounds like you've got some good advice, hopefully you can conquer these cravings!
