Low glycemic index diet?

Hi all,

Have any of you ever tried the low glycemic index diet? It is supposed to help balance blood sugars & prevent highs & lows. It is based on carbs. I just started reading about it--the author is Dr.Jennie Brand-Miller. Just thought I would see if any one has heard of it or tried it.
It sounds like a good diabetic diet but based on the glycemic index of the carb b/c not all carbs are created equal.

Any input appreciated. Thanks
Diane

I definitely stay away from "white" carbs as much as possible - I rarely eat potatoes, white rice, bread, regular pizza dough, and so on.

Foods with a higher glycemic index definitely screw me up and have unpredictable effects on my blood sugar - extremely unpredictable! Everything from spikes to slow sustained carb digestion where it seems like I have to watch and correct forever..
  • I try to eat low glycemic index foods, and avoid those that have a high glycemic index whenever I can. I do have bread once in a while, but it has to be good bread -- and worth the damage to my post-meal blood sugar! No cereal, rice (except basmati), and I try to avoid crackers/pasta/other processed food (especially those containing flour). It's difficult to find a balance and I do what I can. Definately helps, though.

Is there a book that lists the GI in all the foods & gives a carb count too? My insulin dose is based on carb total at each meal.

    Thanks,
    Diane

My book by Jenni Brand Miller has carb counts in it as well as the GI. Do you have the book above? Maybe it would be a better fit?

    Hi Erin
Thanks for the response. The book I have is "Glycemic Index Cooking made Easy" by Brand-Miller. It only has Carbs, cals. fat & fiber for each total recipe not the individual foods that make up the recipe. It would be great if there was a formula we could use to figure out the GI of everything we eat ourselces.

What is the name of the book you have? I can get it at the bookstore or on line.

    Thanks again,
    Diane

    Check out this guys site.

    http://mendosa.com/gi.htm

He has a spreadsheet with a lot of GI and GL info

    http://www.mendosa.com/GI_GL_Carb_data.xls

Also has a lot of links to other sources of info. Not sure how current it is but check it out. I have found lots of good info at his site.

The people who invented the GI and GL are out of Australia. Searchable database of foods at http://www.glycemicindex.com/

  • The Mendosa site is great! Actually it is where I learned of the Brand-Miller books and website.
