How long do your symptoms last?

I apologize if this has been asked before.

I am gluten intolerant (not Celiac). I do everything I can to avoid gluten, but sometimes it sneaks up on me. I've noticed now that with every accidental gluten ingestion, I get a new symptom. My other symptoms also get worse, such as I now get migraines versus just a bad headache, severe abdominal cramping versus and upset stomach, etc. and they are lasting much longer. Does this happen with you? What do you do once your symptoms start to come on? Do you just deal with them or do you have a "remedy" that you immediately do? Mine always starts about 4 hours after ingestion with a bubbly belly and cramps, followed by a severe headache, then fatigue and mood swings. After about 2-3 days, I get a rash on my hands and my acne flairs up (so fun when you are in your late 30s :-) and have finally gotten it under control!)

Thanks in advance and again, sorry if this has been posted :o). I briefly went through the forum, but didn't really read all of them.

I've noticed the same thing with my symptoms (mostly fatness, but a few other troubles). I've only been GF for a few months (not Celiac's, just gluten sensitive).

Just the other day, I had a small Wendy's fries (which turned out to not be GF) and my stomach was puffed up the rest of the night. And all the next day, I was foggy and lethargic. That's the same reaction I would get from a fully glutened meal only a couple months ago.

The symptoms are starting to outweigh the deliciousness! I don't have an immediate remedy, but I do take an acidophilus supplement to try and get the bad stuff out of my system faster, and help digestion. My symptoms aren't as bad as yours, though. Then again, they might be someday the way things are going...

There are supplements out there that have enzymes to help digest gluten. If I end up with symptoms/have ate some gluten or drank a normal beer I usually take two of these supplements, load up on peppermint tea, and ride it out. I would say it takes about 2-3 days for me to feel completely better. It helps if I eat fresh fruits and veggies/fiber to move the gluten out of my system. Hope this helps!

I'm not sure how medically sound this is, but I pound the heck out of my system with probiotics, enzymes, and water.

The enzyme mix is a mix of Amylase, Bromelain, Papain.

I'm traveling, so the probiotic I have with me is just Lactobacillus Acidophilus (100 million). When I'm home, I usually use one with L. Bulgaris and a few other strains. This bottle was smaller and easier to carry.

Last night, I ate something I knew I shouldn't have (If you've ever been in Pittsburgh, I have one word: Primanti's).

I didn't eat the whole thing, but it was enough to cause potential collateral damage. I took a few probiotic tablets before we went out. As I was eating, I took 2 enzymes, and another 6 (again, not sure if this is sound) probiotics. I took a few more probiotics this morning when I woke up. And LOTS of water.

No bloat. No cramping. None of the other, icky side effects. The only "complaint" was that things were a little loose this morning (TMI, but it's honest.) I'll take that over belly pain any day though. I don't do this every day though. This was just because we were here.

And the Primanti's sammich was pure heaven.

One more thing to add. As weird as it sounds, my allergist prescribed an acid reflux med. It doesn't sound like it should make sense, but it stopped the weird reactive skin flares.

I totall agree with syntonics probiotics! I usually take one/day but tend to double that when I have indulged.

Another thing that helps for the stomach pain/throwing up is tonic water.

My husband and son both seem to be about 3 days to fully recover. DS throws up within a few hours, and that's fine the next day, but still a few days for behaviour to get back within normal parameters.

For me, it is more like a week or two before fogginess/depression is all gone.

Thanks for the info. I've been GF for about 5 months and notice that the slightest little exposure now sets me off. It takes about 3 days before I start to feel better, but about a week to fully recover.

The probiotic info is interesting. Thanks for that.

With my reaction I'm so afraid to have a gluten laden meal because the symptoms aren't just worth the risk, but it would be interesting to do the probiotic regimen that you do and give it a go. I miss Chinese food!

I'm getting to the point where I'm not craving the gluten stuff as much but every now and then, I would love to have it, but just thinking about the side effects scare me :o)!

    Thanks again for the info!

One more thing that is useful in addition to what has already been mentioned....for the rash/skin symptoms is taking a bath with epsom salt. It helps me out (I break out on my abdomen).

I have more stomach cramps and bloat which I didn't connect at first as it was TOTM so I was expecting them, but also get lot more bowel movements like twice a day for a few days, oddly though I seem constipated at the time.

If I'm going to treat myself to something risky I try and do it PMT week when I have bloat/cramps anyway so it doesn't disrupt my exercise routine too much as I have to rest when the monthly cramps kick in anyway.

Usually I find if I keep levels very low I can tolerate it no problems, for example I love yorkshire pudding and brought up having them every sunday with roast dinner. I haven't found any pre-cooked gluten free ones so just have those mini ones which are literally 2 bites about 45 cals..sometimes I even get away with the occasional cream bun too but I replaced daily items with wheat free/gluten free items such as cereals, bread, wraps, rhubarb crumble with oats on instead of pastry crumbs, GF brownies etc.

I miss my biscuits though, I like them for supper, sometimes I risk a regular one. I tried finding an oat biscuit which looked nice with chocolate on but found it had wheat in. Anyone know where can get nice GF biscuits or homemade oat ones in UK, that have no wheat in? (I'm ok with other glutens)
