Okay "My Fitness Pal" Veterans...questions!

Do you utilize your calories you earn for exercise each day?

Also, how many pounds a week is your goal to lose?

Just wondering.....=)

Replies

  • My goal is to lose 2 pounds/week. I'm content to lose any, though!

I started off not eating any of my exercise calories back, but I have found that when I do that for several days, I get absolutely starving and occasionally binge. I still try to stay as close as possible to my daily goal (without exercise,) but I now know that it's not the end of the world if I eat a little more after a workout.

Thanks Erin! I am hoping that this helps me stay on track and jump start my losing again (instead of gaining!)!!
  • I only have like 270 calories left for today. I haven't worked out yet, but I also haven't eaten dinner or had anything except water since lunch. I have a healthy dinner planned, but I know I am going to need a snack...like now.

So my question is did you struggle at first to stay under and does it get easier?
  • I think that is the main reason I only lost 2 lbs this month. I started exercising more, alot more, but was afraid to eat the extra calories. A friend pointed out that when you don't eat the extra calories burned your body goes into starvation mode and you quit losing. Hard to believe MY body would ever consider going into starvation mode but I am going to try it this month and see what happens.

Regarding the # of I want to lose a week. I started off at 1 1/2 and then when I didn't lose so much in January decided to bump it up to 2 lbs a week and only had 1200 calories a day. That was too few calories I found so I moved it back to my original goal. Slow and steady will keep it off - I just have to keep telling myself that.
  • Lindsey you are probably eating too few calories. If you are trying to lose 2 lbs a week you don't get too many calories a day and I think you will get discouraged. Unless you are faithful about working out so that you can earn more calories I would change your weekly weightloss goal. The only time I have struggled is when I changed my goals to lose 2 lbs a week from 1 1/2.

Heather - how did you find me to be friends - when I try to find other friends it says I need their e-mail addresses?
  • That's what I thought. I also have a Body Bugg (which I haven't used since August) but to compare, I was allowed to eat 1750 calories (quite a few more than 1200 :) and I needed a calorie deficit of like 650, which as long as I watched what I was eating, I would do pretty easily every day. That was also during summer, so I was much more active since I work at Kone Korner and walk my dogs almost every day in the summer.

I know have 9 calories left for the day, so my dinner will probably have to be around 300. I think I am going to charge my body bugg tonight so I can at least get an accurate reading on how many calories I burn a day and use their deficit.

The good thing is it is way easier to log food on myfitnesspal. It seems to have more foods that are normal and less diet-y.
  • Does anyone else have 1.5 to 2.0 lb fluctuations in their weight from day to day? I could weigh 2 lbs less tomorrow for no good reason.
  • My weight does fluctuate from day to day, so I try not to worry about it too much.

I'm at about 1300 calories/day, and it hasn't been too bad thus far. I eat a lot of protein and fiber-rich foods and drink TONS of water. I've also found it helpful to have a cheat day once a week. (Tim is a really bad influence!) Don't feel guilty if you go over your calories.

When I started this back in Oct. I told myfitnesspal that I wanted to lose 20 pounds in 6 months - which for me averages out to 1/2 pound per week - or a little more. I tend to vary my calorie intake each day so my body doesnt get used to the same amount of calories - sometimes I go over. I just weigh myself once a week. The thing I like about this plan is that after I enter all my food for the day, I can tell if I really should have that last snack or not by how many calories I have left. I just found this out from my daughter, you can scan the bar code of your food (like a frozen meal) with your phone and it will go right into your fitnesspal.
  • I'm going to make myself quit weighing everyday. I didn't have a scale back when we started and I did much better. I got one for Christmas and I find myself jumping on it every morning and get discouraged when I'm up. My goal this month is to "try" not to weigh until our next weigh-in. I don't think I will be able to stay off it but I'm not going to be doing it every morning!

I agree with not weighing everyday. It just gets discouraging. I set mine to lose "1 pound a week". I am going to start with that and if I don't feel i am getting results, I will change it. I just don't want to get discouraged and feel deprived. I really like this program so far and it is great to have the "group" to give each other motivation and feedback!! =)
  • I'm actually thinking about moving my scale to the basement. I jumped on this morning and was up .4 lb. I also drank 80 ounces of water yesterday, and kinda failed at dinner. My point is a pound is 3500 calories, so why did I think jumping on it this morning would be any different than yesterday morning? But whatever. I did adjust my calories because I think 1200 is unrealistic even if I work out to earn more back A) because I won't work out every day and B) because I still want to enjoy food sometimes.
  • Scanning your food. That's cool!
