So, for those of you who have never heard of Bob Jones University (probably all of you), this is the first college I attended. They kicked me out. Jump to page 20 "Social Life".

Lol, I said that once! They put me in counseling and asked if I ever had sexual thoughts about other women. I thought about telling them that every woman does, but figured I was in enough trouble already :laugh:0 -

Well, long story, but it seemed like a good idea at the time!! I managed to last four and a half years, but they finally kicked me out the semester I was supposed to graduate.
Not to worry, though. They did me a favor. I ended up with a degree from an accredited university :smokin:
I just thought of it because a friend and I were laughing about that place today. He actually got a degree there, but then had to go to UNCC to get a second bachelor's so he could actually go to a decent school for a master's in composition.
Needless to say, we're all pretty messed up when it comes to dating. All my friends from there are either married and working on their third kid or perpetually single :noway:0 -

I've got some John Coltrane on right now, guess I am getting kicked out. The 18 year old version of me would have gotten kicked out in about an hour.
There are people who are happy with the whole being married and working on the third kid thing. Perpetually single sucks.0 -
We got in trouble for listening to Disney music.
I suppose it's cool if people are happy with the third kid thing, but I can't even imagine having three kids at the age of 27. Most of the ones I know are only 24. Yikes!0 -

I can understand your mindset on that one. I can't even imagine my own life with kids. I have a 2nd cousin who is 3 months younger than I am and she has 2 kids. A regular first cousin who is less than a year older than I am has a kid. Someone from college who was a grade below me has 2 kids as well.0 -
Crazy that that is a college and not a high school! It sounds stricter than BYU!0

This is kind of personal to me as well,from 1979-1988 attended a church that was pastored by a man who adhered to this philosophy.
Dating was only acceptable if it was a person of a similar belief system.
As it was out here in the middle of nothing that cut the dating possibilities down to literally single digits.
My brother who went to a different college that was almost as strict became a pastor and after I had a disagreement over the way the church was treating some people and left sent me a letter "disowning me".
What he said was I was not allowed in his home nor would he have anything to do with me.
That allowed him to conveniently go on with his life while I inherited 2 parents who were unable to take complete care of themselves due to age (father was 59 when I was born) and infirmity (mom was legally blind since a child).
I am very careful not to mock or disparage anyones religious beliefs and also am very sure of those I hold but needless to say I take a dim view of what I think can reasonably called extra Biblical doctrine.
These doctrines and practices,while easy to laugh at and probably were started with good intentions can be destructive.

Carl, I'm so sorry if I came across too lighthearted about this subject. I completely agree with you. Trust me, at the time, getting kicked out my last semester was not a piece of cake. Add to that the fact that this school completely used me for my voice (not joking! I was a soloist in the opera, was the only student soloist in their Living Gallery presentation, and sang at several different "special" events for friends of the school, all in one semester while taking a more than full course load), and then when I had a complete meltdown from sheer exhaustion, spending several days in the infirmary unable to do anything more than cry and sleep, told me that I was one of the laziest people they'd ever met. The next semester they kicked me out, telling me that I was morally corrupt and banned me from campus and warned the students against communicating with me so that they could remain above my influence.
Sounds like a cult, right? I've been in counseling off and on since then (this was about four years ago), and only now am I starting to realize that it wasn't my fault. I guess getting to point where I can genuinely laugh about the situation is a huge milestone for me. I'm so so so sorry about what you've been through. It hurt badly enough when it was my friends and people I thought I respected. I can't imagine my own family turning on me like that. From what I know of you, you're an amazing, sweet, unbelievably generous man, and I am proud to be one of your many mfp friends.
