So, I am finally moving out of my parents home-went there after the divorce, and then I stayed to help them financially, and now I am going :)

I looked at my new apt yesterday (my gf has dozens of rentals, and this is the one that is availabe and the right price), and it is small but perfect for one person, but looking for tips on how to maximize small spaces?

TIA for any tips :)

    Congrats & good luck!
Ikea is a great place to go for storage solutions. There's one in New Haven.

Do you have an Ikea near you? They have great stuff for small spaces at decent prices. Also, they have setup displays that can give you ideas if you dont want to buy new stuff.

Furniture that doubles as storage! And shelves! That's all I've got. :ohwell:

I rent a mini-storage to keep some of my stuff (seasonal, motorcycle, and anything else I don't use frequently).

Good one! Also, try not to interrupt the "flow" of a room. Don't use oversized furniture, as it will just make the space even smaller...

Most of my stuff is in storage now, but I am trying to eliminate that completely...not sure that will work .........we shall see

Definitely make use of wall space and the back of closet doors. I've even added modular shelving inside my kitchen and bathroom cabinets so that my countertops aren't cluttered. I hate that.

I just got rid of the vast majority of my crap when I had to move home several years ago after being laid off. About once every two weeks when I was unemployed I went through all of my stuff and tossed anything almost all of it.

Mirrors maybe. Large ones. Give the illusion of more space. But yeah I recntly bought some cube looking storage units, they are awesome with the draws big enough for pairs of shoes etc near the front door. Just keep things less cluttered I guess :)

Think creatively about storage, and use things that work rather than something that says it's 'designed' for the purpose you have in mind - I bought over-door, multi-tier towel rails to hang my sweaters, tops and scarves on - saves on shelf space, and makes use of an otherwise 'dead' area. I also used 10kg Fed Ex boxes to store books and papers, stacked them in a shape, and covered them with a cloth to make a 'table' and storage combined (also works with stackable crates). Multi-bar vertical trouser hangers are your friends for skirts, trousers, jeans etc. In fact, vertical storage is almost always a good thing - takes up less floor space. Definitely mirrors to create the illusion of more space and add light, and don't go too miniature with decorations - one large or medium-sized item/design will look a lot less cluttered than lots of small things. Congratulations!
