People who claim to NEED to be gluten free, and are only barely there - as in the don't eat stuff with it, but eat "May Contains" and don't worry about contamination of their kitchen.....when they bake with flour!

I hate that this is a food fad. :grumble:

I can understand you getting annoyed if people liken their situation to a true celiac's and complain about how hard it is etc or don't think contamination matters if they cook for you. But I also don't think what you're describing is a fad. I can eat some gluten, but if I eat too much I get tired (and if I continue to do this I get extremely fatigued to the point where I can't function). I know this purely through seeing how my body reacts when I cut out/add more gluten. Others feel ill after too much. Everyone is different, I don't see why that should bother you.

I get it. And sometimes we get annoyed because...we simply do. That's fair. I'm allergic to wheat. I get a histamine response and edema. But like most allergies, dose matters, so I don't have to worry about cross-contamination or trace amounts.

But think of all the wonderful things non-celiacs have given you. All that gluten free stuff you can now get in the market...that's due to the larger number of folks buying their products. Without them...you'd still be special ordering these products through the mail. And...they've gotten way tastier over the years. Because people that have choices (non-celiacs) won't buy something that tastes horrible.

Gluten free bakeries. With pastries that don't taste like cardboard.

More restaurants offering gluten free choices. Businesses don't do this out of the goodness of their hearts, they do it because they've become convinced that there's a large enough market to make money doing so.

So yeah. I get that folks like me can be irritating. Because it can be annoying to watch others have it a bit easier. True enough. But think of what you get in the bargain!

I dont understand why it would bother you that while we don't have celiac's we are intolerant, meaning that trace amounts don't give me stomach cramping but a dinner roll would leave me doubled over in pain . . . Twice (once on the way in and once on the way out) and that more than trace amount gives my son bleeding sores on his *kitten*. I think it's silly as a diet plan be abuse I don't find it limiting, but with an allergy of any level it can make a huge difference in comfort and bloating.
As far as baking, annually I make pounds of Christmas treats and can't afford to do it all gf, so I make both gf and regular getting all the gf baking ou of the way first and then do the wheat flour baking. I scrub and scour to reduce cross contamination in my kitchen, but it's just not financially feasible to do it any other way.

If I cook for a group of people, they are forwarned that it will be gluten free. I only cook gluten free. I refuse to cook 2 or 3 different meals for different people. My kitchen is totally gluten free, and I don't allow anyone to bring gluten into my kitchen. It's that simple.

I don't know why people want to eat gluten free as a fad, I personally don't enjoy it, but I have no choice. However, if you have a choice, then do what you want. It shouldn't cause someone to have a pet peeve. It's your kitchen, you know what you can and cannot have, so comply and be well, or be non compliant and be unwell.
