Unitarian Universalism

I have been solitary since finding my true heart in Wicca. I have never practiced with anyone but my mother and that was limited to silent mediation together.

My boyfriend attends a local Unitarian Universalist church. It is a blend of many faiths. They don't have any specifically Wiccan covens but they have a pagan group that meets. He has been trying to convince me to attend, but for some reason I am reluctant. I am not sure if I am just nervous since I have never practiced with others or what the deal is.

Below is what they list on their website as their traditions.
Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;

Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;

Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;

Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;

Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.

Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.

    I go to a Unitarian Universalist church when I am in the mood on Sundays. The actual church services are pretty, well, church-y. I grew up pagan, so the whole sitting in pews and singing hymns stuff is weird to me.

    However, the sermons are ALWAYS fantastic. They frequently have speakers that move me to tears with their message of universal acceptance and love.

    Every morning before services there is a discussion. Topics range from forgiveness to overcoming prejudice to understanding religions from around the world. I like to attend the discussions and then skip services.

    My church holds full moon circles in a nice grove out back, has car-pool options to earth festivals and pagan festivals throughout the atrea, and has a flourishing pagan community that functions within the larger church.

    There are also Christians who are Unitarians, Athiests who are Unitarians, and Agnostics who are Unitarians at my church.

    I can't even think of a single drawback to the Unitarian Universalist faith. They are a church that teaches love, acceptance, and learning. They hold missions that do not preach their faith: they just hand out food and water and shelter to people in need. They seek to accept and love people of all backgrounds, in all walks of life. It's pretty amazing.

    I grew up Catholic so I guess I have some left over hatred for church, I absolutely hated going to church when I was a kid. Even when I was young I knew what I was being taught was not what was in my heart. My mom never liked it much either but she forced us because if she didn't her parents (who are very devout) would never leave her alone about it.

    I know the only way to find out if I like this church is to just go, but I just keep making excuses.

    Just try it out. If you don't like it, don't go back. They're not going to steal your soul and make you promise your first born child.

    They might steal your heart, though. :heart:
