Corn issues?

Hi everyone! First, I'm new to this group today. I've been a confirmed Celiac since Nov. '10, pretty much an expert on living GF now. However..... I've been very suspicious that I'm slightly intolerant to corn as well. I don't get as sick as I would if I were glutened, but I do notice some similar effects when I eat corn (popcorn, tortillas, etc). Anyone else?

Good question, I'm glad you brought it up. I'm not a celiac, but I do choose to be gluten free, because some of my long standing health issues ceased when I stopped eating gluten. I've been gluten free for over a year now.

I'm not a doctor, nutritionist, dietician, circus clown, etc, either, but I would like to recommend you research "leaky gut syndrome" in answer to your question. The corn you're talking about could be really harming your intestinal tract.

We humans are not designed to eat wheat or grains. Any food with a hard shell or husk is damaging to our intestinal tracts, because we don't have the ability to digest them. That's why corn comes out the same way it goes in - whole.

Check out "leaky gut syndrome" and "why grains are harmful". I stopped eating heavy amounts of grains (and don't eat anything that has a husk on it at all) at the same time I stopped eating gluten.

I am more regular than I have ever been -- despite the whole "we need whole grains and fiber in our diets!" mantra the doctors are trying to push on us.

I can't eat very much grain of any kind or I get gluten like symptoms.. that is because all grains contain a certain amount of gluten..

My kiddo reacts to corn as well as gluten grains, though not as much. My dad reacts to corn and sorghum as well as gluten. I have given up all grains.
  • Hi, I'm allergic to corn, wheat, barley, rice & potato, but I don't have celiacs. I'm almost 30 & found out about 3 years ago. Sometimes when I eat something that has any of those (almost everything I grew up eating does!), I get like a hangover, super tired./lethargic feeling, headaches and then sometimes its barely even noticeable. Which I have to say, makes it even tougher to quit-quit, or the fact that I've just have gotten used to it??? Probably doesn't help much but that's how my corn allergy is. Any advice that helped you out I be very willing to try!

You really just have to cut it. If you keep waffling on it, you never really get it out of your system.

Feel free to browse my diary for recipe ideas. The only thing you're allergic to that you'll find in there is potato.
