Holy Cow! Biking followed by running....

I was having a conversation today with a woman at work who is a big triathlete! She's done tons and really trains year round. I told her that I am training for a Sprint. Other than my husband, she is the first person "in real life" that I have told. She advised that after EVERY bike run I should go for a short run (1/2 mile to 1 mile). She said that there should be "real" brick days, but that always taking a short run after a ride would really help my legs quickly get used to things. So, tonight I rode for about 30 minutes. When I got off I ran a mile. I have never felt anything like that in my life. I have done a lot of running. Once a week I run 8 - 10 miles on a long run and most days I run 3 - 5....so I know running. This run after the bike ride honestly felt like my legs were not my own. I felt like I was picking up weights. I really understand the term "brick" now (and I know this wasn't a real brick). The funny thing was, I felt like I was running like a snail. I would have guessed I was running a 12 minute mile. I literally had NO SENSE of timing. When I finished it, I had run the mile in 8:50....which is really good for me. Very, very, cool.

Am smiling from ear to ear. Welcome to triathlon!!! Glad you've got a good sense of humor about this.

There are many aspects about triathlon that aren't the least bit obvious till you experience them. And the bike/run brick is without a doubt one of the most (in)famous. Lots of people don't experience this till their first race day. So you're way ahead of the game. Your friend is a good friend, indeed. On a good note, as you train through this, the feelings will become more natural, and less like you're on a hamster wheel.

As far as I'm concerned, though, that WAS a "real brick". So maybe a little more credit for yourself. You're doing great!

    TriJoe.

This is exactly what I've been doing. 1/2 to 3 miles off the bike EVERY TIME. Not a hard brick, but it has made a huge difference in how I feel.
