Dairy and Arthritis

I posted this in the Happy Herbivores group and decided to re-post here for more visibility :)

Good Day everyone, I hope this message finds you all well!

I recently watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=5VWi6dXCT7I about the addictive properties of cheese, meat, and sugar. He very briefly mentioned that people with chronic arthritis have found relief when they gave up dairy. I'm wondering if any of you have had this experience?

Or even if not arthritis, for other chronic pain? I have had shoulder pain since high school (had an injury) and these last few years it has gotten much worse. While doctors don't know exactly what is causing the pain there is evidence of various forms of arthritis in my shoulder. Currently I'm a pescatarian, but after watching that I decided to give vegan a 21 day chance (maybe I should just make it 30 after all I am reading the 30 day Vegan Challenge) If I can cure this pain through diet I'd much rather do that then go through yet ANOTHER surgery!

Anyway, I'm hoping some of you have had pain relief when switching to vegan, that will really help keep me motivated :)

Emily, I can tell you this, two weeks after going completely vegan, my arthritis that has pained me for over 30 years disappeared. That was five weeks ago and with all the crazy weather, it has not come back. I have been a chronic pain patient for over 18 years with a bad back. The pain is so far dimished, I no longer consider it real pain. I doubt seriously that I ever return to dairy.

Giving up dairy is a pretty common suggestion to those on an "anti-inflammatory" diet for autoimmune disorders, so I'm not surprised to see that. Joel Fuhrman addresses that in several places on his website, books, etc. There are several others, but I don't recall them right off.

I was watching this video yesterday while walking on the treadmill.

He says much the same thing. I don't have arthritis myself, but what he says makes sense to me. I could never get my Mom to try this while she was alive. She suffered terribly from arthritis but was very picky about food, and just wasn't willing to try going plant-based.

Good luck to you. I hope it brings you some relief.

Good luck with it! I hope you find some relief! My husband has Crohn's disease and has found sound much relief by switching to a whole foods vegan diet. He was lucky in his allergy/sensitivity tests to not also have a problem with wheat or gluten.
