Anyone ever pay to join a triathlon training group?

My local running club is hosting a triathlon training group for beginners. It is $160...which is a lot of money for me. I emailed the trainer to get some specifics, but I am just not sure if it would be worth it. They bike together on Tuesdays, run together on Wednesdays, and do a swim/bike/run routine on Saturdays. They also send you a workout schedule each week. I can't decide about investing in this. My husband thinks I should stick to doing it on my own because I have a pretty good schedule. My only thought is that it might help with my biking (which sucks). Thoughts?

What do you know about the person coaching? How accomplished are they? Do any of their pupils have accomplishments? Is it the same plan for everyone or is it tailored to you?
I'll say this, that is a very cheap price. Most training groups around here are that for a month so I'd be skeptical. I would find a local triathlon club if there are any. I pay $60ish a year in dues. I've made a ton of friends through there, some faster than me and some not, and we put together group rides for the weekend and post to the club FB page when we are doing OWS or other workouts so that anyone can join us. I've become much faster on the run and bike because I'm training with better athletes than myself.0 -

Are you with HRTC? I thought about attending something that they put on (haven't done much research into what) but my main concern about joining a club is that I am SLOW! I'm working on getting faster cycling to hopefully be able to ride with our hospital team in the next year but I'd be concerned with a club dedicated to triathalons that it wouldn't be appropriate for me because I am so slow.0 -

No. I'm with CyTri (Cypress Triathlon Club). HRTC is just too big for me.
Define slow. Most rides that I've been on, even those advertised as 20+ mph, have a 15-18ish group.0 -

Heh, I didn't know Cypress had a tri club (then again I'm very new to this). That's actually in my area.
I'm slow but getting faster. Since I got the new bike (real road bike and not my hybrid or the 800lb *old* steel schwinn road bike I was using) I'm seeing a lot of improvement in speed. But I am still slow. My goal for this sprint tri in June is to do the 10mi ride at a constant 16-17mph pace. It's a process, and I'm getting there slowly but surely (no pun intended).0 -

A side note regarding cost of training... I cheaped out on swimming lessons and ended up in a swim class where *I* am the strongest swimmer by a long shot (most people in the class are learning not to drown... which I applaud them for because I think everyone needs to know how to swim). It was not what I was expecting at all and I get very little instruction. That being said, they did give me some drills to work on and my breathing is getting better. I just really isn't what I was looking for.0 -

It's new as of last fall, but has grown fairly rapidly. There is a large demand out here. Find us on FB. Seriously there are people of all ages and abilities in there from people who have several Ironman finishes to those who are doing their first sprint this year.
Which race are you doing in June?0 -
MH Sugarland Sprint Tri.... Little baby sprint with a pool swim at First colony.0

Just looked it up. Be careful at those U turns. Lots of folks will take WAY too much speed into those things and everything goes NASCAR.0 -
I am a member of my local triathlon club. It's has been a great value with about 250 members and a core of 40-50 pretty active I have gathered a ton of knowledge from the group. Lots of group runs, rides and Sunday we will be doing our first group open water swim of 2012 which I am looking really forward to. In addition to the training opportunities we get discounts from some of the local shops which has made up for the cost of the membership of $40 per year.
