I want to add a half-marathon

Hello-

I started running in Jan. after a long hiatus. I am planning on running a 1/2 marathon in Sept. I have a family wedding this summer and a lot of the weekends have been reserved for wedding activities, but I wanted to find some additional longer races (than 5k) to help keep me motivated to train. The only 6+ mile race I found that I can attend the next few months is May 20 and it is a half marathon. I do 1 long run a week and last week my long run (the max) was 9 miles. How should I modify my training plan? Since I had so much time between starting to run and the 1/2 marathon I really stretched out a training plan I found online. But now I would like to go from 9 to 13 miles in 3 weeks. Here is what I was thinking for the long runs:

week of 4/30- 11 miles
week of 5/6- 11 miles
week of 5/13- 8 miles
5/20-race

Does this sound reasonable? Or should I change the long run the week of 5/6 to be 12 or 13 miles?

Any advice/sharing of experience is appreciated!

-Shannon

I think you will be fine with two 11 mile long runs! The longest long run I have ever done before a half marathon is 10 miles and I have completed three half marathons now.

I like the Hal Higdon running guides - the novice 1 longest run before the race is 10 miles.

    Good luck!!

For my first half, my longest training run was 10 miles (I also used the Hal Higdon program). You should be fine going for a half in 3 weeks since you can already run 9 miles.

I used the Hal Higdon marathon training program! I highly suggest it as well, it is really good.
Good Luck with your run :0)

Thanks! It's been years since I ran a race so long and I'm nervous about pushing it too much.

I returned to the running/racing scene in Jan. I trained for a 1/2 that was in the middle of March, longest training run was 10 miles. I then signed up for the CMM 1/2 that was April 28th and my longest run was 7 miles. I added speed work and shaved 7 minutes off my time. I only run 4 days a week due to work schedule. I think muscle memory helped me. Good luck on your 1/2

I agree with bigerig - you should be fine with your current training program. I've run a few marathons & a half marathon, and in my experience the mileage you need to be ready at to comfortably finish a half marathon is 10 miles...
