Just diagnosed.

So, I have been diagnosed with PCOS.
I get my period about once or twice per year, and I thought this had to do with me being overweight, but when my doctor sent me to an outpatient center to get a pelvic ultrasound, I knew something was not right.
Also, I have facial hair, I have had it for a long time, and I am so embarrassed. I cover as much as I can with makeup, but there is still somewhat of a 5 o clock shadow...its so embarrassing, but I dunno.
I just need someone to talk to about this, as I have nobody to talk to.
Thanks.

I'm sorry you have it! It's not a fun club to be part of, but there are worse conditions out there we could have and you are not alone. One good thing is that weight loss can improve your symptoms. And there is laser hair removal - if you go that route do your research to find someone with good experience working with darker skin. But it's a better option today with advances in lasers and skin cooling techniques than it used to be for those with olive complexions and deeper. There is also Vaniqua that you can get a prescription for that can slow the unwanted hair down. And prescriptions like Spironolactone can have a positive effect on hair growth as well. I know how embarrassing it can be, but know that others are not nearly as conscious of it as you are if they notice at all!
Did your doctor talk to you about diet? A lot of PCOS women do better on low-glycemic/lower carb plans because of the insulin piece of the syndrome.
I'm sure it feels overwhelming now (I admit I cried a lot when I was diagnosed), but 22 years on, it's more of an annoying gnat to me rather than a big deal. It has its challenges, but it's nothing you can't handle!

Hi, as celeigh says not the best club to be a member of but whether we like it or not members we are .... I like you have probably known for some time I could have pcos but put the symptoms (lack of periods the extra facial/body hair down too weight, well after blood tests and external/internal scans was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. The doctor has put me on metformin 1000mg (2 500mg tablets ) so far touch wood not too many side affects and it has made a difference with my carb cravings, am losing about 1lb a weeks most weeks so little steps make a difference, I have to keep thinking that 1lb a week is 52lb a year, i've read that 1lb for someone with pcos loses is equivalent to 3lb for someone without it - so every lb makes a difference. You'll find lots of interesting articles and support on here and I'd say read as much as you can about the condition and keep asking your gp about the options and if they'll work for you.:flowerforyou:0
