Tempo Runs

Tried out my first 30 minute tempo run tonight for 30 minutes, and had to say it was pretty intense. I felt uncomfortable which I wanted to feel, but feared it was too much. I was with my running group, and my running coach could see I was pushing, breathing hard, and says during tempo runs, its good to feel uncomfortable, but still need to be able to talk..would that be right? Advice..my usual steady, comfortable pace is the standard 12 min mile..where my tempos ranged from 9-10 min mile..

For me, tempo runs are not normally fun. However, normally I can breathe and talk (albeit it not for long periods of time).

Are you sure that tempo pace is right for you? It should be a 10 mile --> HM effort

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Although I think tempo runs mean different things to different people. My understanding is it should be a little faster than your "jogging/warm up" pace, but slower than you goal race pace. If your normal is a 12 minute mile, I would think your tempo would be more around 11 minute mile. I always think it should be "slightly uncomfortable". But not so out of breath like you're racing.
