My horse has a hip problem

My gelding has an old injury that was aggravated back in late summer 2011. I didnt KNOW that he had the injury, the equine chiro told me. Anyway, I thought he had EPM because he was so off in his hind end. Turns out he has problems with his left hip. I have some stretches that I do with him and I also have him on an inti-inflammatory supplement, which seems to help. Anyone have experience with this kind of injury? What helped and what didnt? I dont ride him. My daughter does once in awhile but she is only a little thing - 6 years old and doesnt do more than walk around or go on a trail ride. He isnt really "lame" he is just off. He brings that foot farther underneath himself when he steps and he sort of drags his toe out to the side, rather than stright back when backing up. It's very strange. I am hoping he gets well enough to the point that I can use him for light riding again, especially once I take off the excess weight. Any ideas, suggestions would be helpful. He has seen the vet but without XRays, there isnt much she can tell me. The equine chiro seems to help more than anything.

Once you get the x-rays, is there any way you can set up an appointment with your farrier and equine chiro at the same time? Or at least get them in touch via phone? Your farrier can possibly offset some of the tension in his hip through hoof angles, pads, shoes, etc? Of course, you might have already done that! Just a thought.0

You should probably ask this on the real Chronicle Forums....0

I took him to my trainer last night and the chiro was there. They both watched me work him and discovered he does favor is left hip BUT the issue is really in the right hock. I have a call in to my vet to get XRays and see what we can do for him. I hope he is fixable because he is freaking awesome. I am not bragging or anything.0

Yes actually!! I had my vet take a look at him and she suggested a couple things - put him on an anti-inflammatory/joint supplement. I already had him on one supplement but she recommended another (B-L Solution and Super Sound). I have had him on both for about 2 weeks now and can already see an improvement. It takes about 4 weeks for the full effect to be seen (or so I am told). She also recommended trying a linament with hyaluronic acid and msm mixed with dmso. The DMSO will carry the compounds to the joint and should help to lubricate it a bit. She said that she thought it was just arthritis and that we could do injections if I wanted to but she thought since it was mild, that these two things may work without having to go so invasive. I tried the dmso mix before I went on vacation and he did improve a lot. Now that I am back I have started doing it again and he is picking up already. You really cant notice anything off until he canters and then you can just see that he doesnt quite have all the flexion that he should have in his back legs. I will probably never be able to use him for anything serious but for lower level stuff and trail riding, he should be fine. She gave me some bute to use if he gets worked and comes up really lame but just for "as needed". I also stretch him out really well before riding and that seems to help. I know he is feeling better because the last time I worked him, he threw in a couple head tosses and what he considers "crow hops". If he doesnt come full circle, I may do injections but in the mean time I will see if this works and if he continues to improve. I will say that those two supplements I give him are AMAZING. He went from being obviously "off" to barely noticeable in a couple of weeks.0
