So... I have a rather important birthday coming up, and am thinking of taking myself somewhere lovely (and sunny!) for a long weekend in mid-July. Any recommendations for places, probably in Europe, that are beautiful and relaxing, but not too expensive, and work well on your own? I'd love to go to the Amalfi coast, but prices at that time of year are inclined to be prohibitive! Greece is probably out too, because of current unrest.
To be clear, I'm not after a buzzing club/dancing/drinking/'singles' scene - just somewhere gorgeous to relax in the sun, eat some delicious food, and indulge a little in time for myself.

Australia is the bomb. Just sayin!
But maybe France,Switz alps area? Soooo nice!0 -
Well, my fave place in Europe is Lisbon  Not that I've seen the whole of Europe
Here is why: -
Drenched with beautiful architecture and history
Tour buses to get your bearings, but small enough to walk around the main city (take flat shoes, pavements are cobbled!)
Beautiful weather, friendly people
Al fresco dining - delicious food and wine!!
Beach - accessible half an hour train ride away, but the sea/dock is walking distance
Buzzing night life if you want
Traditional night life if you want
Cultural, artistic, fun!!
Basically, everything you want in one place :flowerforyou:0 -
Portugal...hmmmm. Hadn't thought about that - an intriguing idea!
Australia...I grew up across the ditch, and had some lovely holidays there, but it's a bit far for a long weekend  The alps might be nice, though - another good thought! :flowerforyou:0 -
I like the Munich-Salzburg-Passau area of Germany and Austria. Great people, architecture and the scenes around the alps are beautiful. Also really like the area around Metz-Brussels-Luxembourg.
For safety issues, I'd probably avoid Rome unless it has gotten a lot better in the past 10 years.0 -
Fiji, Samoa, Tonga... All relaxing, cheap and fabulous.0

Not a place I've been, but someplace cheap that I am dying to go to is Iceland.0

I love Oslo
I'm actually heading there in less than a month for long weekend. Sure, I have friend who lives there, but I would go there on my own too!

Not inexpensive, but I would go back to Paris in a heartbeat.
Southern Italy is also on my list. Heck, I'd go anywhere.
Happy Birthday and this is a great idea!0 -

Well, if you're attractive, I'd recommend Prague. ;-) Not so much sun, but it's a fabulous city, one of the most beautiful in Europe. Food is great if you know the right restaurants. Fortunately, I do... ;-) You can also make a day trip to the spas in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad), where Mozart, Beethoven, Marx, etc. hung out.
If you're set on sun, then try Croatia. Dubrovnik is an amazing town, although not so easy to get to. Or perhaps Barcelona? Tapas and Sangria, a winning combination.
