Swimming time?

How long does it take you to swim a mile? I've been doing this 3-4 times per week in the pool. I'm not trying to be fast, I'm just swimming freestyle. How long should this take? Today it took 40 minutes (about). I haven't been worrying about increasing speed, but I think I need to start!

I am right around 35-36 minutes for a 1600M swim. I occassionally work on speed but honestly, I just don't care that much to get faster. I find that I can pickup about a minute by going all out and come out of the pool exhausted or enjoy the swim and come out fresh only losing a minute. Seems like an easy choice to me.

If my IronMan swim is 1:22 and I feel good and ready to ride 112 miles or I come out at 1:18 completely spent and ready for a nap it's just does not make sense to spend much time fretting over it. I can make up 4-5 minutes on the bike with fresh lungs and muscles much easier than on the swim.
