Aging. it's strange/

just saw a pic of a college friend on facebook (class of 1983)... and I'm wondering where that cocky young stud went. this guy gives new meaning to the word 'avuncular.' Having never been good looking I'm settling in to middle age and with my weight loss, with a big smile. I don't know if I should contact mutual friends and ask if he's been sick... but damn he looks sick... weird..

I sometimes think ageing is 20% physical and 80% mental.

I don't feel old, but I know I am middle aged. I'll be 50 in 2½ yrs time - which I know isn't that old - but I don't know whether or not I look my age.

I know having lost weight, esp off my face, that I've been told I look younger, but then again, that's what everybody says when some change is affected.

My husband's 7 yrs my senior, but I don't think he looks any older than me and vice versa. On the other hand, my brother will be 60 next year and in my respects he looks like an old man, although I know he's like a mischievous wee rascal in his head; whereas my best mate Chris who's the same age could be 10 yrs younger, has quite a mature head on his shoulders.

Certain circumstances, such as a long-term illness can take it's toll, but it's hard to know unless you ask and that isn't always easy.

    Poor kid...

I think age is what you make of it. That being said, 40 isn't the new 20...it's 40. You're deluded if you think trolling for the young ones is sexy...lol. Having never been told I look young for my age, I just accept it, and I'm grateful and hopeful thatI get to grow up to be a crotchety old perv in my autumn years!

there are times I wanna get violent when i get carded. especially if i SEE they're not carding everyone for whatever reason. in fact.. there's a bar I won't go back to because of this.. I mean really, my age is plastered all over my face. you could cut my head off and get tired counting the rings..

A couple of years on a visit to Edinburgh, Jem and I went on a tourist bus and when we were buying the tickets we were given a seniors discount. Neither or us corrected the ticket seller

it does seem like there's some point in time where it diverges. We've been talking about it a lot at work, because our boss has become an OLD person, crotchety and confused and making comments about how he's not young anymore, but he's only 6-7 years older than the next oldest coworker and you'd never guess they were in the same age bracket. Its totally a mental state - and to some extent I think people think "its fine, I'm OLD" and just let themselves look old. They dress old, get old hair cuts, etc.

this is a little strange.. i was kinda with him till he mentioned corduroy.. and one of my favorite songs from years gone by is called No Rules by 18names. of course I'm told all the time I have too many rules, but that's neither here nor there since I tend to make my own...

I'm 51 and my partner is 59. He probably looks younger than me, at least he has less gray hair. Having a slightly older husband has helped me psychologically at those "milestone" birthdays like forty and fifty. Being in my forties wasn't a big deal because he had been there for years and was doing just fine. I suppose next year I'll have to get through the milestone of having a husband in his sixties. Sixty still seems old, but it probably won't by the time I get there because he'll be pushing seventy at that point, knock on wood!
  • being in my 40's...i'm pretty much in the best place in my life i've ever been. had a great time in my 20's but no way am I in that same place. Been with the same man for 10 years and he's the same age as I am. Beautiful guy inside and out.

What I find weird is when I see my DAD aging. He doesn't take all that good care of himself. But I always think to myself: "wholly crap, I hope that's not me in 20 years."

My husband is 7 years my senior and seven months into our relationship I was whisked off to New York to celebrate his 50th birthday. In 2½ year's time it'll be my turn and I was planning on visiting San Francisco, but we'll see.

Amongst my close circle of friends, the youngest are in their early 30s and the oldest in the early 70s, but our outlook is fairly similar: life is here to be enjoyed!

    [I "milestone" birthdays ]

I'm not HUGE on birthdays because I'm a Christmas baby,, but friends have taught me that birthdays are about YOU. You get everything you want, you eat what you want, no one can fight or argue or be the least bit ugly or negative. It's a terrific thing...

so mentioning 'milestones' I took myself to London for my 50th (5 months in advance) to see a dance company that doesn't come to the states much.. I had an absolutely fantastic time... all by myself....
my sis-in-law turns next year, AND the nephew graduates from high school.. we're considering Italy... and they better take me with them

so I guess i should ask how youns celebrate the milestones.....

My partner and I have a 10 year age difference, but he is the younger at heart. Until recently, I'd have said he was in better shape. A lot of things caught up with me about 46 or so and my health deteriorated pretty severely until I was able to start turning things around last year. You got to read the signs and take care of your self as young as you can, it's just so much more difficult later on.

Well you share your birthday with Annie Lennox (she's 5 yrs older than you - but you both look marvellous!)

I can't imagine what it's like to have a birthday clash with a major holiday although only by an accident of birth: had I been born Stateside, my birthday would regularly clash with Thanksgiving.

In the UK when you get to a certain age, you're not suppose to make a big deal out of birthdays, but I think you should celebrate every year. Jem's birthday is in July (the day after Independence Day) and we always have a summer party in the garden. As mine is late November we've never really had a "regularly" event: one year we had our engagement announcement party and a couple of time we've been away.

That sounds yummy... I'm not a big bean fan, but Jem is

And yes, I was born a month before Xmas. My paternal grandfather died on Xmas day the year before I was born, so my grandmother would never spend Xmas with us, but mum & dad never let that spoil our enjoyment.

My birthday is November 20, which can never be on Thanksgiving. (The fourth Thursday can't fall earlier than Nov 22.) It was nice last year because my family all spent Thanksgiving week together in Palm Springs. We all arrived on my birthday and celebrated that night.

    This +1000

My wife is 20 years older then me (she is 69 and I am 49) and people who see her thinks she is in her late 40s/maybe early 50s.

She keeps up with exercise, technology, world events and is always trying new things (i.e. she will be doing a warrior dash with me in a couple of months and is trying some rock climbing this month).

On the other extreme I have a friend who is 42 who might as well be 80+... very bitter, jaded, and already stuck in a sort of "the past was better mode". A real downer to be around AND he looks like he is in his 60s.

thinking again of the pic of my friend from college. I'm sure he's happy and fulfilled with a full life of wife and kids,, and i did a little happy dance that he looks so much older than I do ( I HOPE) ... but then again... that makes me a bit pathetic, superficial and petty. funny how life goes isn't it? off to cut some grass and visit dentist...thank GOD last year's dentistry issues are over... just a cleaning today

Oh yeah... I love baked beans, esp Heinz baked beans.

And beans on toast is a student favourite and actually one of the most nutritious meals you can have.

I had beans for breakfast this morning along with poached eggs and pork sausages and of course toast... and I'll probably have exactly the same tomorrow (as I'm still at the hotel in the Bridal Suite of all places)

And Jerry... you look terrific.. I don't want to add that awful caveat "for your age!" because it's totally irrelevant.

THANK YOU KYLE.. but yeah.. age IS an issue... it's a line between middle aged guy and 'creeper.' guess it's because I work with kids.... always been sensitive to my age and weight. try this recipe.. it is remarkable... any beans you like and so easy cos it uses cans not reconstituted..
