Fell! Need some reassurance.

So...most days I love my dog. Today, not so much. When I getting ready to load him up to take him to the vet, he got so excited that he took off running off the side of my porch to the car...while his leash was wrapped around my wrist. Well, he's 80 pounds of dog and I wasn't prepared at all, and he pulled me down. I fell probably a foot and a half off the side of the porch, mostly on my back...hit my head on the ground (just dirt...I'm fine) and have some scrapes and scratches on my hands and arms. I feel fine...but...
I called my OB friend down in Texas hoping for some reassurance...which he's usually very good at. Today, however, he must have been in a mood...because his response was "You are probably okay, but sometimes falls can make the placenta tear away from the wall of the uterus...since you are only 10 and a half weeks along, there wouldn't be anything they could do to save the pregnancy if this happened....just watch to see if you start bleeding or cramping".
Um...that wasn't quite the answer I was looking for. I was hoping for "You didn't hit your stomach...you are fine". Now I am completely freaked out and keep checking for blood (there isn't any...but the fall was only 2 hours or so ago) and waiting for cramping (none of that, either).. Need some reassuring stories of people who have fallen in their first (close to 2nd) trimester and have NOT torn their placenta. Please?

I worked full time at a used bookstore with my previous pregnancies. I fell, was rammed in the belly with carts, lifted heavy *kitten* boxesand other assorted things. Nothing happened. While your friend is correct in that the doctor would likely not do anything for you, you are most likely fine. Your body is a really great shelter for your baby.0

I'm so sorry this happened I know its scary, but ill be praying you are okay. I wish I had some words of comfort for you, but please let us know how you are doing.0

First of all DO NOT WORRY. Stress, anxiety etc is the last thing that you need and isn't good for the baby when your pregnant anyways. So just try your best to remember that and try to keep any worrying thoughts out of your head until your checkup. Im thinking you can schedule a checkup pretty soon?? Im sure everything is going to be fine sweetie. ...I never fell but in the beginning I did bleed a little and I was so freaked out but everything was fine and all the worrying I did was for nothing. I am sure everything will be okay!! good thoughts only!!0

If you didn't fall on your belly, you are probably fine. There is a lot of protection around the baby, and especially at that far along, it is still so little. I understand the worry though. If you don't have an appointment soon, go to the ER to make sure, so you can stop worrying!0

A friend of mine fell down her basement steps while carrying a load of laundry and landed on her belly. Both she and the baby were fine, but it did scare the crap out of her! She was in her 2nd or 3rd trimester when she fell, but point is that it was a nasty fall and everything was okay. I also know someone who was in a car accident at 20 weeks and had a huge seat belt bruise across her belly, but she and her baby were also fine. Like someone else said, there's lots of cushioning and protection in there! I would check in with your own doctor, though, just to be sure and for peace of mind!0

Thanks for the responses, guys....feeling a little better after a long nap (and still no bleeding or other pain down there). I spoke to my friend's mom, who has been a nurse for an OBGYN for 20 years, and she said the only time in her career she has seen someone lose the baby due to placenta issues this early on due to trauma was several years ago when a woman was flat-out hit by a car, straight-on. She said I have no reason to worry about the baby, but that I should monitor my head to make sure I don't have a concussion. Eh...concussion, I can deal with. I'm tough. And I really do feel fine, aside from the scrapes on my hands.
My next appointment is Tuesday...if anything changes by tomorrow, or if I start worrying again, I'll call and talk with my own doctor. But for now...I'm going to assume that people have been having babies for forever, and have done a lot more horrible things to their bodies than fallen backwards off the porch. Here's hoping, anyway...I tell you this, though...the dog isn't going to be getting a lot of walks during then next few days while I wait for my husband to get home.0 -
Oh....and P.S....thank you SO much for being encouraging...this is why I stay off of Babycenter.com! If I had posted this there, I feel 10 people would have come out of the woodwork telling their stories about how they tripped a little and miscarried 7 times or something. :-)0

I have to stay away from babycenter too. that site has me worried about every little thing. They tell you that once you get past 12 weeks chances of a miscarriage are extremely low but there are all these stories on there of all these women who have miscarriages at 20+ weeks! I cant read anything on it anymore!0 -
I would agree with everyone else - I'm sure everything's fine!
I don't know if your doctor's office will do this, but the OB nurse and midwife at my clinic are really cool about checking women out with the doppler if they need any extra reassurance. (I've had mine done twice this week, but I do work here too.) It only takes a couple of minutes to hear the baby's heartbeat and get rid of your anxiety. (They don't charge for this at my clinic.)
I've deleted babycenter off my favorites list. And babyandbump. I can't read their stories. Everytime I think I can breathe a little easier, someone posts doom and gloom over there!0 -
Well, I called my OBGYN this morning just to let them know what happened...and I definitely got scolded. Not for not calling them yesterday, but for not calling my REGULAR doctor to see about hitting my head. She made me call my general practitioner (who asked me a bunch of questions and said "you are fine...your OBGYN is over-cautious). So now the OBGYN wants me to come in today to check on the baby...she says it's "for my peace of mind" and that she's "sure everything is fine". And then I got scolded again for hitting my head...haha. I can't win. So...I am headed there in a little bit for yet another scan...I hope all this scanning doesn't make the baby come out with three heads. Wish me luck....now I'm nervous again!0

Had my ultrasound....baby is fine, with a heart rate of 153. He/she even moved around for a little.
I, on the other hand, feel like crap. Woke up with a stiff neck, which I figured I could deal with...but here in the past couple of hours, I hurt from my neck down to some of my ribs and part of my back. I am thinking I messed up something in that area when I fell...seeing my general practitioner tomorrow and spending the evening tonight with a few bags of frozen broccoli and some Tylenol. Ugh.
Super glad to see baby, though....and got to hear the heartbeat on a doppler, which was super exciting.0 -

As for the falls...I wouldn't worry too much. I have so far fallen every pregnancy and my middle daughter it was a pretty nasty fall, but they where ok. Just momma was sore and upset. I am kinda waiting to fall this go...just hasn't happened yet lol. With that said I would always call your OB when you have a fall for piece of mind and so you don't get chewed out again!0 -
Glad you and baby are doing fine! Always scary when anything happens.
I'm 26w with my first. I'm sure I'll get scolded from all of you but I played ice hockey until I was about 12 weeks, coached until 14 weeks. I was very careful, but certainly fell a few times.
I agree with previous posts, our bodies are very good shelters for our babies. I went in the OBGYN to get a heart rate check around 17 weeks. I had been feeling the baby every day since about 16 weeks, then nothing at all for 5 days. Baby was and still is fine! It made me feel soooo much better to hear the heart rate and know that everything was ok.
I agree, I've been here much more than Babycenter lately, scary stories on there! But that's true with a lot of things; everyone wants to tell the horror stories because they're much more interesting than the normal, average, everything went fine stories.0
