Equipment - Modifications

I have a gym in my Apartment Complex with free weights, a bench and two machines.

I've lifted weights off and on in the past and have been able to modify to use Dumb Bells but I'm having trouble with this program and I just started a couple of weeks ago.

What I do with squats, is put a DB on each shoulder and squat. What I found on the increase to 50lbs last week was I'm having trouble lifting the 25lb DB onto my shoulder.

I've looked into used Bench and weight sets (which can be really reasonable) Unfortunately, My apartment is so small I really don't have space for it.

Is there anyone else modifying with the equipment they have. Any tips on how to make it work?

    Heya Teffy :) Welcome!

The main mods I do are because of structural issues with myself and not the equipment but I'm more than happy to brainstorm.

Have you looked at incorporating some Strongman training into your routine to improve things like grip strength? Farmer Carry is great for that and easy to do with a set of dumbbells or even a bar you hang weight off of.

There are more compact benches- but sometimes space is just too tight. I'm jonesing for a power rack and I might have to knock out a wall to fit it in my apartment- maybe the landlord won't notice the addition? ;)

Could you bring your own barbell to the gym and use their free weights? Then all you have to store is the bar.

I guess I need to correct my post; my gym has dumb bells and not free weights.; So, I couldn't switch the weights to a barbell.

I'll Google the Farmer Carry because stronger wrists will defiantly help me to get the weight on my shoulder.

I'm thinking the best way to go would be to buck up and join the national gym chain; I didn't want to do that but that's how I'll have all the equipment I need.
Plus,I'm thinking about moving in the next year or so and I'd end up having to move it., if I bought it.

    Thanks for the feed back.
