PC Geeks - I need some advice

Hello my fellow geeky MFPeeps
I used to be very tech-savvy but now I've lost my edge a bit as to what's hot and what's not in the world of computing.
I've just got a new Windows 7 PC as my old XP box was slower than a giant tortoise with an arthritic hip. It's a very basic PC as I didn't want it bogged down with too much crap, but now I'm wondering what software to get as my old OEM stuff won't work with Win7.
Basically I need suggestions to replace the following, and I don't want to break the bank:
♦ PowerDVD - I've liked this DVD player and want something similar
♦ Nero - probably will have to just buy the latest version as I want something reliable and user-friendly for burning CDs and DVDs.
♦ A nifty program fr ripping CDs anc converting mp3s to WAV files.
Many thanks

1 - For simple MPC-HT, for powerful VLC, also check out Media Centre that comes with Windows (not media player).
2 - ImgBurn, you'll never need anything else
3 - CDex
