High volume low calories

I have a healthy appetite and like to feel full after my evening meal.

Can anyone give me some ideas for some filling low calorie foods/vegetables? - I use a lot of courgettes and butternut squash and accompany most meals with brown rice or wholewheat pasta but could do with maybe a bit more variety.

I know there's a recipe board on here but I'd prefer to stick to food commonly available in UK supermarkets!

    Hello! I have a lot of frozen veg in my freezer (peas, sweetcorn, broad beans, mixed bags of veg etc) and if I think a meal could use some bulking up then I just pop them on! And because it's frozen it lasts for ages, so I don't have to eat all my veg in the same week I buy it :-)

    As alternatives to brown rice try quinoa or pearl barley. I find them both very filling. Quinoa has the added benefit of being quite high in protein for a grain (4g/100g,) which also makes it more filling. I cook and eat it in a similar way to cous cous. You can get in bigger supermarkets, Tesco and Waitrose even have their own brand stuff.

    Some vegetables I would suggest: Mushrooms, onion, green beans, broccoli. I quite often stir fry these using 1 cal spray and lots of garlic/herbs/spices/lime juice to make them more flavoursome.

    Also if you don't mind eating processed foods then any quorn style meat products like burgers/sausages, are quite filling, and lower in fat than meaty alternatives.

    And again, if you don't mind processed foods, then hartleys sugar free jelly, which you can get pre-made in little pots or as crystals in sachets, is a low calorie dessert if you fancy a change from fruit.

    I love low fat Greek Style yoghurt - Muller light is my favourite as it tastes rich and creamy but has no fat and is only 86 cals. It also helps with your protein :)

    I hadn't even considered frozen veg and will investigate the pearl barley and quinoa.

    My 'standard' meals are basically brown rice and chicken or fish with courgette, mushroom and onion cooked in passata or ww vegetable curry.

    My one guilty pleasure is Yeo Valley greek style yoghurt with honey

    BROCCOLI roasted is my fav filler at the moment.....just cut up into florets & slice the stems up, put all onto baking tray with a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt and roast in the oven for 10-15min. You have to try this, so much tastier than boiled or steamed.

    Making a thick veg soup as a starter, only about 100 cals for a decent sized bowl?

    I love rocket salad. Something ridiculous like 12 cals a for a 70g bag but really fibrous and tasty.
