Hey everyone--

new to the group here, and to MFP. long story short: I NEED to start strength training! i've always loved yoga, dance, walking, etc...but strength training? not so much :)

can anyone recommend a book or DVD that is primarily BODYWEIGHT EXERCISES that i can follow along?
I prefer following an instructor, DVD, etc rather than just winging on my own.

i am working around an unsolved knee injury (occured during 1/2 marathon training, 2011), hoping to lose 35 lbs, and want to strength train for general health and injury prevention. currently doing cardio and yoga about 3-4X weekly. vegan clean eater. loving MFP.

tried the book "you are your own gym" and that was pretty good. but i might like a DVD better. want stuff i can do anywhere--no gym equip :)

thanks!

If you are a newbie to strength training and want to do it at home with minimal equipment I would first try The Great Dumbbell DVD. It shows you exactly how to do each exercise so you have good form without injuring yourself starting out and it also has 3 different level workouts. Keep in mind that it is a real tutorial type DVD but it is really good and does have the 3 workout routines as I mentioned. You may also want to checkout Absolute Beginners Fitness Weight Training DVD, it's a good one. For a great quick workout (30 minutes) I enjoy Kelly Coffey-Meyer 30 Minutes To Fitness Weights DVD. Hope this helps! Good luck!

P.S. All you need for these DVDs are a set of dumbbells (very inexpensive) and your own body weight

I've seen people recommend the workouts from this website: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/

But the reality is that bodyweight workouts are only going to be considered "strength training" for a very limited time frame. You're going to need some equipment or join a gym at some point soon.

Check out "You are your own gym."
I primarily do Starting Strength, but I bought the YAYOG android app to do when I cant' get to the gym. I really like it.

Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training 2nd Edition is fine, but the 3rd Edition seems a lot more clear and has better photos and illustrations in it.
