Tabletop vs PC vs Console

One of my co-workers intro'd me to tabletop D & D - definitely a big change for someone like me who's used to the pixelated world of PC and console gaming. The organic interaction was a nice change and the group of people were incredibly creative. Our conversations were endless at times and for the most part, I enjoyed them. However, when it came to who's the "real gamer" subject, I graciously bowed out 100% of the time - it truly was not worth the wasted breath. There argument was and still remains to be that tabletop gamers were the first TRUE gamers and will always been TRUE gamers. People who are strictly console or PC gamers are never real gamers. That argument would lead into PC vs console then Wii vs PS3 vs 360. REALLY!?

Frankly, I can sum it up in one word - preference. That's basically all it is!

After months of listening to 44 year-old, balding guy who literally still lived in his mom's basement and was gainfully UN-employed tell me that I only truly became a gamer once I picked up my D10s, pen and paper I decided that enough was enough. Sadly, I had to say 'Sayonara' to my Wed and Fri night group.

I said all that to ask you this...what is YOUR preference?

I've played all three... I'm still a PC gamer. I play emulated games, or use an xbox controller when I can.. but it's always on my PC :) I have all the game consoles, haven't touched them in months :P

I agree with the idea that it depends on preference. I've tried all three, and while D&D and other tabletop games do require a lot more work, when it comes down to it, they're all games.

I think D&D is a blast. The only PC games I've ever really gotten into were Sims games and various MMO's. I'm suuuper behind the times with console games; I really only play on the PS2 (PS games as well), Gamecube, and DS. Newer games nowadays just don't really do it for me... lol.
  • i like them all!

i think the preference is what i want to do...

if i just want to kick back or kill some time i'll hit up the console (from Snes to XB360)

or maybe do some side stuff in a MMO

if i want a proper "session!" but... am feeling either antisocial, or jsut want to sit in my lounge pants then i'll MMO it up ont he PC talkt to people as and when...

but tabletop (we boardgame aswel as roll D's) its like a social event, where the game is the equivilent of choosing a venue sometimes, we had alot of fun with the free RPG "there is no spoon" just lends itself to quick start and epic adventures

does my head in when people talk about "hardcore" gamers

anyone who has MMO'd knows the "raiders" vs "casuals" yawn fest, i just stayed away from it, guess that made me a casual....

    I avoid console gaming.

I prefer PC gaming when bored and looking for something to do. Tabletop is way better for the social aspect, but if you don't have a good group it quickly becomes frustrating as all hell.

I enjoy all three, but if I was told I could only pick one, I would pick D&D/tabletop games hands down. I love them so much! I actually got to game with my old buddy last week for the first time in years, and it was great.

I've done all 3. I have never done D&D. I did MtG for tabletop, and both PC and console gaming. I don't really have a favorite. I haven't done MtG in years but I still have my decks sitting in a box some where lol.

I play tons of console and PC games, although I turned my table top gaming (MTG) into both as well as it's easier to play with my online friends! If you have friends IRL that play table top though, that is the way to go!!

Definitely PC for me. I love my keyboard and mouse, and I loved using my joystick back in the day as well. I feel that a PC gives you more precision. It also gives you better graphical potential, and... well, it's just generally a lot less limited than a console, even if does provide a few headaches. I also find that there's a difference in the feel of interfacing with a computer monitor vs. a television screen... I feel more mentally connected to the monitor, and while I can get involved in a console game, I do feel more passive while playing them (probably for reasons of physical distance and the amount of possible distraction, among other things).

Tabletop gaming, however, I've always felt was in a class of its own. It's "gaming" so far as the creation of an alternate reality, but it's completely different. Video games are one artistic medium while tabletop RP games are quite a different medium. I would say that I find a certain impressive quality in the limitless interactive potentials of tabletop RPs, but with a bit of creativity, video games can carry their own fascinating experiences of interaction which other mediums can't provide (Braid, for example). It's kind of like arguing watching films vs. live-performance theater plays. Both are potentially effective for a wide variety of entertainment purposes, but their essences are too different for honest comparison, at least in my opinion. So yes... preference is the key.
  • Gaming started for me with D&D, then I went on to the console, and finally moved on from there to the PC. I had the most fun with D&D, but I haven't played it in almost 10 years. I loved how creative I could be when making up adventures, dungeons and pcs to harass, annoy, stump, and challenge my group. We had a blast each time we played. Now that I'm a family man, I like the console (ps3) much better as I can always click pause when real life calls. Its kind of hard to do that in the middle of a raid / boss fight etc...

    Which is true "gaming"?

    Yes.
