Why Did You Go Organic?

For me it started with in 2009 when I first saw Food, Inc. I was amazed on how much I didn't know about our food system and what effects it has on not only us, but our environment. Over the last two years I have spent countless hours researching the effects of industrial and processed foods and the benefits of an organic lifestyle. I made the official conversion to an all natural and organic diet this year. For the first time, I feel like I eat less yet have more energy, my breakouts are gone, I am no longer on three medications and a shot for my allergies (they are under control with no medicine), and I generally feel better about me.
Isn't happiness what lifestyle changes and diets are suppose to be about?
So tell me, what started you?

I have always been into organic foods but after taking a course in Entomology (study of insects) I "realized the reality."
No documentary will tell you, no farmer will tell you, and no non-organic company will tell you...this is what you see. And you have to see farmers saturate the plants to really get it. The professor for the course used to work for farmers in the area and he mentioned one thing that has haunted me: he asked the farmers if they ate the lettuce they grew....the response was "are you kidding me? No way!"
I never buy fruits and veggies from outside the US because they typically have no regulation for how much they can spray and since they are sometimes from poorer countries, they over-spray to make sure they can save their crops.
As for produce in the US, it is not just about me not wanting to eat poison, it is also about our ecosystem, our soil, air, and all other elements. Pesticide runoff is a horrible culprit. What I eat is good for me and for the world!0 -
djkshdfd,
It's amazing what you said about farmers not even eating their own food. I have heard that several times and I just can't believe it. I also agree with you about the ecosystem. I have made a conscious effort to purchase organic cleaners, clothing, and personal products. While I know it's minor in the scheme of things, I do feel good that I am at least helping and not being part of the problem.
Thanks so much for sharing your story!

I also saw Food INC. After viewing the video i did some research through books and google. So the reason why i went organic is knowledge. This is still very new to my family and i.0

Yabi,
I totally agree. Most of my soaps, skincare products, and shampoos have organic ingredients. I once had someone say "people who buy things organic that are not edible are stupid. What is the benefit?" But that's just because of the way the person was looking at it. They were not looking beyond themselves.0 -
Welcome to the revolution shreddin_mama!
Ok, it's not that dramatic, but still, welcome. Since it's new to you and your family don't ever hesitate to ask any questions you might have about it. I personally would be glad to help out.
Cheers,

You are absolutely right! I also think about the chemicals they put in major products these days and I just don't want anything to do it with. It may sound silly to others, but I am happy with what I am doing and that's what matters to me. =0)

I have been a vegetarian my whole life. I have never agreed with the treatment of animals in the food industry and still do not. By having to shop at health food stores in the early 90's to find anything worth while to eat, My family natural leaned toward organic fruits and veg because that was what was available. Since then, having gotten all growed up and on my own, (and after a few documentaries to really send it home) I have landed on an organic diet. I have also moved to a plant based diet. (Vegan for those hoping to add to their dictionaries ^_^ teehee) It is safer, it is much more real than conventional, and it is sustainable, and who doesn't love that?!?! And really, going from not agreeing to the treatment of animals to not agreeing with the treatment of our fruit and veg crops is not that far of a jump. ^_^

That is awesome AreUTheRabbit! Great to meet someone like you!!! I hope one day I can say I am 100% vegan, but currently I am still eating yogurt a few days of the week to get protein up, but that's the only product I consume that is animal.
Breakdown of what I eat:
90% Organic Foods
70-80% Raw Foods
100% Unprocessed
90% non-animal derived foods and supplements
I also strive for non-GMO but since labeling is scanty with that, I do not have an estimate of how much or how little I consume.
By following this regimen I cured many issues in my life:
Had depression and anxiety all of my life- Now Depression free!!!
I concentrate better and remember things with little effort
I feel a "clarity" in many aspects of my life
I have IBS and since I have eaten this way I have had no issues with digestion
I consume very little sodium- just what I add to my food
All I have to say is that this journey has changed my life entirely. I never thought life could be so amazing!0 -

If you are eating 90% certified organic foods then you are at least eating 90% GMO-Free foods!
It's amazing to hear all the health changes that has happen with you since you went to an almost all veggie based diet. Since I been with Rabbit, she has really influenced me to drop animal products from my life as well. I must admit, I see the benefits. Now, more than ever, I am really looking toward switching to a whole foods, plant based raw & organic diet. I plan to do so after the holidays as I feel starting it now would only put additional pressure on the situation and I don't want that.
If you wanted to wean of yogurt for your protein, Rabbit may have some ideas. She used to love yogurt before she went vegan so she might have some ideas.
Best of luck with your journey!

Awesome, thank you.
Rabbit, what do you eat as an alternative for yogurt protein? I already use a powder and would like a natural source. Thanks!0 -

I haven't so much found an alternative for yogurt protein as i have found new proteins all together. Hummus has been my saving grace, it's a complete protein so that's good. :-) If you don't eat hummus already, try it. ^_^ low cal too. :-D0 -
I got into organics mostly because I love the taste of fresh. What got me started was a local farmer doing weekly deliveries of organic vegetables she grew and the variety was a nice compliment to my own gardening. Then a friend agreed to bring me a dozen eggs from her free roaming chickens every week and rabbits when I want them. I also buy honey and maple syrup from her. The latest commitment is from local organic beef. That meat is so tasty and I get 20 lbs delivered every 3 months.
I'll privilege local over organic but both is the perfect combination. I have found where to get local organically fed chicken but I'd have to cut them up myself before freezing the meat. Not yet sure that I'm up to that... In a way, eating local and organic has made me lazy.0 -
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jujubie. It's the first time I heard that going organic has made someone lazy! =0)
If you live in the US, have you ever checked out: http://eatwild.com/ ?
Regardless, welcome to the group and thanks so much for contributing!0 -
Organic for me is practically a no-brainer, would I rather eat food with chemicals or food without? Increasingly my house is becoming an organic zone. I'd say 80% of our meat, probably 80-90% of our produce, and all of our grains are organic at this point. We're slowly upping those numbers, trying to find ways to do it without breaking the bank.
But organic isn't everything to me. There are many ways organic products can and do harm the environment and our bodies. There are many ways companies can be bad while still selling a good product - union busting, wage raping, etc. Going organic is so much more than getting rid of chemicals to me, it's about sustainability, accountability, and awareness.
For example, the dairy we get many of our milk products from is not 100% organic, but they are wholly sustainable. Their cows eat a 100% organic natural diet - they graze during the warm months and eat hay and other feeds during the cold months. If one of their cows gets sick, they treat it with antibiotics but take the cow out of milk production until the antibiotics are out of their system (determined by lab testing). They don't carry an organic label, but they are so much more than that.
To me, this is what is important. Knowing where my food comes from, knowing how it's handled, and trusting the information I receive. I spend a fair amount of time looking into these issues and I know how privileged I am to both have the time to do that and to have the farms nearby that can supply me with products and information I can trust. We are buying local for most of our stuff (of course I can't get local bananas in NYC, and I don't beat myself up about it, but I also don't eat bananas every day anymore), either from our CSA or at the farmer's market. I spend a lot of time talking to farmers and sellers at the farmers' market - these people are FULL of information on these issues and usually very eager to talk to you about them.0 -
I'm really enjoying reading everyone's responses. I don't know if I could ever go totally vegan, but I definitely want to start working 2 or 3 vegitarian days a week into my diet and then maybe work a vegan day and a raw day. I don't feel like I could ever be a vegan/vegitarian with my hubby still eating meat (did anyone see the post about "men are husband's not hubbies?" I think about it every time I use hubby now lol...ANYWAY, I have always liked the idea of being organic and eating more raw food but didn't really feel like I had the means and thought "ehe, I've been eating like this for years, if I can't change a little that's better than nothing." Now we are trying to have a kid and I really want to raise him/her organic. I have not seen any of the documentaries, but looking around and seeing 10yo's with breasts makes me think that the food we are eating has an effect on that. Also, my niece has some learning disabilities and attention issues but since my sister changed her diet to at least not processed she has developed a lot mentally and is now performing more with her age. That is enough for me to think, I gotta consider what I'm putting in my body!0

havalinaaa, I applaud you in your efforts. My girlfriend and I also make efforts to purchase Fair Trade (ensuring the main ingredient is fair trade) and Fair Labor products. I recently been using goodguide.com as a reference to help figure out what companies treat their employee's with the respect they deserve. They make a smartphone app too, so it makes it easier when I am out shopping. I definitely agree with you about sustainability and environmental impacts. I personally keep all that in mind when I buy a product - even my pants are made from organic fibers and recycled materials
Emily, what you said is so true when it comes to our children today. I recently seen a male 6th grader that had at lease DD-size breast. I felt bad for the kid as he has no idea on what path he is being lead down. I also recently read an article in Philadelphia's GRID magazine that did a whole special on kids behavior is reflected on their diet so it's amazing to read the information about your niece. A recent documentary I was watching said something like, "as human beings we are designed to eat nuts, berries, fruit, and vegetables. As soon as we start introducing foreign foods into our system, our mental and physical health deteriorates." After months and months of research, I believe that to be true. My personal goal is to go primary raw and "plant-based" diet by the end of next year. I am at about 60% right now - hopefully I will make it0 -

Thanks for the idea of eating hummus. We have plenty at my workplace so maybe I'll try it for added protein0 -
Hi everyone, I too have recently decided to go organic (it's been about 2 months now) which started out being mainly due to health reasons. I have PCOS and extreme hormone issues and have been diagnosed with lots of other ailments. I'm not sold that I really have all that much truly "wrong" with me, I think my hormones are out of control and am seeing that as they are becoming more stable things are falling into place for me. Around the time that I hit rock bottom, I decided to see a Naturopathic doctor and have an iridology exam done. She was able to pinpoint everything I have going on with me, all without me ever sharing any information about myself. Within the first month of taking the supplements she recommended (there's only 3 of them) I'm seeing huge changes, I would have done this YEARS ago had I known it would help so much.
There are so many hormone altering chemicals added to everything we come into contact with which is what made me get the ball rolling. So far, we've moved to all organic fruits and veggies, we're working on non-perishables - using up what we already have, although I'm thinking about donating a lot of that during the holiday months. There are always places collecting food, especially around the holidays - there are people out there who need a meal and could careless of the origin of it, they just need to eat. We are by no means 100% organic with our diet, but like a previous post said - I definitely am keeping my fruits and veggies organic.
I also started using organic personal care items. That started with me emailing about 30 companies selling organic and natural hair care products and I asked for samples. I've bought organic hair care products before which only ended in me spending lots of money and I didn't like the product. I heard back from about 10-15 of those companies and have been using their products ever since. I have a favorite right now, but I'm still trying to work through my samples so I can decide what I really like.
So everything I've mentioned happened around the same time, which has been since the beginning of October until now. During this time I was also offered a business opportunity to join a direct sales company that is selling 100% USDA organic skin and body care products. The opportunity was too good to pass up, I tried the products and decided that I really wanted them and the investment was so minimal that I decided to go for it. I ended up getting the main line of products which includes all your facial care (not make-up) items and one item from each of the other lines. My business is taking off really well, the timing couldn't be better since there is overall an increased interest in going organic for so many people.
So that's where I'm at. I'm still a newbie in going organic, but I have a lot going on in every aspect of changing over and I can't wait until the day when we've got our house entirely organic. I haven't even thought about organic clothing as Yabi has mentioned, but maybe I'll get there some day. :flowerforyou: I thought it would be great to find a group of other people who are all also interested in organics, which is why I'm here!0 -
Lisa, that is fantastic! Congrats on your career opportunity getting into something that is meaningful to you.
You mentioned you found organic products you really enjoy. What specific items might those be? Just curious because I like trying new things. I use Andalou Naturals Conditioner, Avalon Organics Lavendar Face Scrub and Skin Organics Spearmint Facial Peel. I like them, but most of all the conditioner. I would like to hear about other products out there that people enjoy.0 -
Welcome to our group Lisa!
I am so glad you joined us. You are dead-on with saying that current processed foods have hormone altering ingredients. Have you felt that going organic has overall improved your health?
I encourage the same information djk was asking, to share what products you've found works best for you!
When I get back home I will be more then happy to share my list for those of you that have boyfriends or hubby's you wish you shop for.
Have a great day!,

Hi Lisa,
Sorry for such a long time before a reply, I've been super busy myself!
I think I will start a new thread for favorite organic meals. Maybe this will bring some insight and be a fun way to open up for new things. I hope you contribute!0 -
Mostly I was inspired by the information and all the knowledge I've gained from listening to Jillian Michaels. I think that explains most of my inspired decision to go organic (in a nutshell).
I am also an environmental buff, plus I would like to know that I'm treating my 'temple' as best as possible. I've since inspired my family to do the same.
It feels amazing when ONE person (you) are the core reason for others making a positive shift in their lives.

Just joined MFP this week and started organic eating about a month ago. Enjoy reading everyone's view as to their experiences and why they went organic. The more I read, the more I realize I have made the right decision. Started going to an organic store/market near me and found their produce way fresher that regular grocery stores and the prices not much different. In fact, their sale items were cheaper than the local grocery chain's prices. Will definately continue this lifestyle. Trying to read everything I can on organic eating, products, etc. I am very environmentally conscious and an animal lover.0

Hi! im new to this group and mfp. I have been eating organic foods my whole life, raised organic vegetarian. Lived in cities and communities that have been very conducive for conscious living. I started eating meat and fell off the organic boat for the last few years somewhat. (mostly shopping for organic quick easy foods but eating out a ton from non organic restaurants) i gained weight, and my health and well being plummeted. I have come back full circle. I have made a commitment to shift back into the fully organic lifestyle and really focusing on non processed food entirely. with tons of fruit and vegi"s. It is amazing what a difference it makes in our bodies. I have a teenage son who had terrible acne all last year, made the switch to fully cooking healthy food at home and his acne has cleared up almost completely. (also incorporated a probiotic drink) I turned my entire backyard into a giant garden last year and grew soooo much food it was amazing! i barely shopped at the grocery store at all. in fact im still eating lots from it. I also recently started sprouting again which is a great inexpensive way to eat organic love. I feel amazing when I eat natural organic food and I am really happy to see this group here. thanks0

Bringing this topic out of the archives. I started in 2010 after watching "Food Inc." After that, I started getting all of my family's food from our local co-op. Another great ones for those who are new to organic eating is "Frankensteer."
I myself cannot stomach the thought of the GMO products out there that they consider produce, not to mention how poorly the livestock are treated in the US and CAN. Being fed their own ground brothers and sister (mmmm cannibalism), and grain- which if they are fed too much, "too quickly," when they are first introduced to it, they can likely die.0 -
Everyone's stories are truly inspirational. I am glad to hear so many positive life changing stories by just switching to organic!
Thank you to all those who took the time to share.0 -
I found out in 2008 with symptoms for Type II diabetes. I went to a fantastic alternative hospital in Mexico called Sanoviv. Great experience. found out that I was already a diabetic 7 years before. I also found out I have numerous food allergies to gluten, soy, and whey. Every food at this hospital is organic. All water is triple filtered. While there there, also gave classes about eating organic and changing your food intake. I released lots of weight and also the psoriasis was healing at such a fast rate, I eat about 95% organic now. Love my VitaMix! It is incredible how my taste palate has changed. I can tasted if something is over salted...I hate the taste of tap water now. Also love the movies Food Matters, Food, Inc, Dive!, Knives Over Forks and The Beautiful Truth. "Food is your medicine and medicine is your food!"0

Good morning,
Why did I go organic? My body told me to. I suffered in so many ways due to mercury poisoning, allergies to additives and pesticides that I didn't have a choice. It has been a journey getting better and I am glad to say that the majority of the food I eat now comes from withing ten miles of my home. Chickens, eggs, beef, pork, fish and produce all from local farms who practice organic methods of production. I love the people who grow and raise my food. They are my heroes!
