I've been on MFP since Feb 2010. And no I'm not at my goal...but since joining I've had a baby and moved three times. I am currently in the process of trying to make myself a priority in my life. I just turned 30, I've been married 5 years, I have 2 sweet boys (3, 1) and my oldest has been diagnoses with autism this year. 2011 was a crazy year for me and 2012 has been a year of acceptance. Now I find my way to this group to not only seek out help reaching my health goals, but to seek support from other people an this journey of taking care of yourself, family, a loved one with autism, etc. I hope to get to know you all better!

Melissa

    Hi Melissa!

I'm Jeanine and my 4 yr old son Austin was diagnosed with Aspergers. He has speech delays, sensory/auditory issues and is the most extraordinary person I've ever known. It's quite the rollercoaster!

I'm so glad to hear you're trying to make yourself a priority...that's a tough one. Welcome to the group!

HI! I have a 12 year old diagnosed with Asperger in January. As you mention Melissa - a year of acceptence...but for us it also was several years of fighting the system and then relief as somebody finally understood why my child was having such a hard time, so acceptence has been quite easy for us. But the process sure made me forget myself and totally wore me down.

Welcome and please feel free send a friend request if you´d like :)

Hi I'm Tammy. My son will be 25 next month and was diagnosed with Pervasive Developemental Disorder and ADHD when he was 3 years old. I've been fighting through the system for the past 22 years so I know how hard it can be.

Besides my son I have also spent the past 20 years working for agencies in group homes or day programs with adults who have a variety of disabilities and also serve on the board of directors for one of the agencies. I know how bad the system can be at times making people wait for the necessary services that are needed for their children.

I work as a manager at an afterschool daycare in Denmark and have studied as a social educator and have a management degree, so I know the system (here) and was able to push a few buttons. This is lucky and terrible at the same time. Lucky that we got in for evaluation quicker than normally but also terrible because I took on too much myself because I know how slow the system is and did NOT have the patience to wait when MY child was suffering. (also terrible when I think of some families who don´t have this oportunity or who don´t have the support that they need).
Also - at lot of people treated me badly because they either thought I was seing "ghosts" because of my job and knowledge or that I was spoiling my boy. But we do have 3 other children that don´t have any difficulties....But when we got to the psycologist who was doing our evaluation - she was really great. It was mostly doctors who were stupid to me - and unfortunatly some family members :(

I am sure though, that I can use my experiences in the future to help me try to understand and not judge the families that I meet in my work!

It get's really hard at times. In a way working in the field did help. The things that I learned at work helped out with Troy, and being a parent helped out a lot at work. I know that a lot of the parents were happy to see that a fellow parent was a staff at the location.

Through all those years I did start to not take as much time for myself, or do things that would be more beneficial for my health. I'm glad I've started now. I'm feeling so much better since I joined MFP and started using this plan to lose the weight.

    Hi Melissa -

I'm 31 - married - and mommy to a 2 1/2 year old diagnosed w/ ASD subtype deferred last August. We don't know where on the spectrum he falls yet - just that he's on there somewhere. This little group is a great place to come share the struggles of daily life - and a great place for support on reaching your goals. Welcome!

Thanks so much for the welcome!!

A little more about me: I graduated with a bachelor's degree in teaching special education. I taught at a private school in Florida for only students with special needs and had many children on the spectrum. Now I'm a stay at home mom. My 1 year old is exhibiting some concerning signs so we are going to have him evaluated soon, just to get the process started. My oldest son goes to group therapy 2x a week and has in home therapy 2x a week. A year ago he didn't say anything, couldn't work a shape sorter or puzzle and was content to stare at the tv for hours and rock, spin, moan or flap. He didn't say mama, wouldn't hug, kiss, reach for me, or cry when we went away. NOW he says well over 100 words, hugs, kisses, can say mama dada and Luke(his baby brother) and he knows who we are. He loves Dr. Seuss and reading. He can work any puzzle, name colors, etc. I hope this doesn't come across as rude bragging but we are in awe of what he has accomplished. I'm a so thankful my husband's job moved us, we were concerned enough to call and make those first steps and we put my sons needs first ( trust me, I wanted to hang around the denial/guilt/grieving stage). Early intervention is key!! In the fall he will be going to a school for autism!

Anyway, I'm so thankful for MFP and all the supportive friends I've made and being able to talk to others who are going through similar experiences is REALLY going to help me! I'm sending out friend requests to you all now!!

That is great!! Sounds like he has made great progress! I agree, early intervention is key! My son started preschool last March and didnt have a big vocab and now he is saying all kinds of things! We are working on holding conversations now. He is doing much better! Dont feel like you are bragging..being excited about your kiddo making progress isn't a bad thing! :)
