Maca supplements

So I have seen on this site alot of people taking Maca supplements to help regulate periods, I am just wondering how many have had success with it and how fast you might see some results? I do not get my period at all anymore unless it is with help from drugs. I would get it regularly on birth control, I will also get it with the help of Provera but I never get it again on my own. Also I've done a round of IUI and IVF and while doing that I would get my period using those medications. We have taken the summer off of doing any Dr appointments for IVF so I want to take this time to try and lose some weight and regulate my periods on my own in hopes to get pregnant on my own. I am not very over weight, just 163 lbs, none of the Drs I have seen through trying to get pregnant have told me that I should lose weight but I know it could help alot even if it is just 20-30 lbs.

I just got the Maca pills and started taking them last night and wanted to know how soon people noticed anything and if there is much success with them, I am also taking Metformin.

Thanks!

  • Let me know how the Maca turns out. I haven't heard of it until now. I'm on metformin and have taken provera. I'm starting the prometrium tonight. I'm supposed to try this for 4 months and if no luck, I think my doctor's plan is Clomid. I'd love to go natural eventually if possible.

wow. never heard of it. I am still very overweight and starting clomid soon after battling PCOS for over 4 years without conceiving. losing weight will help, but my periods stopped for over a year at one point, I believe to this day it was stress related (almost lost house/depression/debt etc etc) , i know it sounds dumb but try and relax a tad more if you can it could help to get them back. Since ive started taking metaformin my weight has started to come off.

I heard about Maca on this site and seems like alot of people take it, since I started Wednesday night I am already getting some cramps so it would be great if that means my period is coming.

2SecondChance- can I ask why they are having you take prometrium? Are they having you do that to start your period? I took it after I did my IUI and IVF cycles and if I got pregnant I was supposed to take it for a while longer cause it would help avoid a miscarrage but when my tests were negative they had me stop and my period would start. So just wondering if they are having you take it to start your period or for another reason? I'd be interested in taking it if that is another option as well.

So I started the Maca pills last Wednesday and I am already getting my period! Is this a wonder drug!? So I will start taking my temp so I can see if I am also ovulating, I really hope this does regulate things so we can start trying a few times to see if we can get pregnant on our own without help from Drs.

Yes I got mine from GNC but there are lots of places online too.

So I started them last Wednesday and I started getting some light spotting, it was a light brown color like I get before my period would start. But that is all that I had from Friday to last night, it never became a full flow period. Not sure why that is and I was thinking of talking to my Dr. I never get periods on my own, only with the help of fertility drugs so I'm not sure if the light period is just normal for me or normal for my first one on my own. Anyone else know about any meaning behind getting just a very light period? I barely needed a panty liner even.

Tomorrow I"m going to start taking my temp to see if I can tell if I ovulate or not in the next month and I'll see if I get my period again on my own.

If anyone else has any experience please let me know.

I am starting these so I thought I would check out how everyone is doing on the Maca.
  • Hi Shannon, Sorry for the late reply - I have my settings so that I get a notification if there is an post update but for some reason I'm not getting the notifications.

I was to take the Prometrium to bring on a period and if I got pregnant, I was to stay on the Prometrium to hold the baby. Confusing, right? Anyway, that's what my doc said. I have since started seeing a highly regarded Chinese acupuncturist and I am definitely having some success. I started 3 weeks ago (still no period after the prometrium...keep in mind the history is that I only had my period regularly when on the pill and have been on the pill since I was 14. I stopped the pill august of 2011 with no period until I took the provera this year. So only 1 period and no ovulation (I took the tests following the provera).

Anyway. I started acupuncture and I started feeling some movement on my right side literally 10 minutes after my session. I've also been taking herbs to make me ovulate as well as a prenatal and fish oil caplets. She kept me on the 500mg metformin that my doc put me on even though she said the dosage was too low to do anything (I asked my doc to up it and she said it would be too much - everyone else i read about seems to be taking 1500mg). I take an ovulation test every other day and a pregnancy test once/week.

Like I said, I just finished week 3 (@ 2 days/week) and I got my first +OPK yesterday. She had me start on 500mg maca (3 times/day), Vitex and royal jelly a few days ago. I feel like I'm a lot of supplements, but as I see it, anything beats the medication and so far, it seems to be working!

Just waiting now to see what happens next! :)

Please keep me posted on how things go for you! In the last month I have not been doing very good with diet and exercise, we had a grandparent die and since then I have not been able to get back into it. I am starting again now and hoping to keep it strict! I have not gotten my period again and I am on cycle day 56, so I started Provera a few days ago to see if I can get things going again. I am still taking Maca and it didn't seem to get me my period again so I'm not sure what to do to help things. Working out might have been something that was helping me so I hope I get more results when I get into that. Everyone's body is so different so it's hard.

Let me know more about your acupuncture!
  • Hey Shannon - Sorry to hear of your loss. It's difficult to stay on track when you are sad or stressed. You'll get back into it. It's ok to fall off here and there. I will keep you updated on the acupuncture. Based on the results I have seen so far, I would recommend acupuncture (if you can find a Chinese acupuncturist, that's even better).

I have set my first appointment with a accupuncture and herbal medicine place so I'm excited to see if anything will help!
  • That's awesome! Let me know how you make out. I have so far had 1 +OPK but my acupuncturist said that based on my blood work, it was a false positive :( Seeing a specialist next week and continuing the acupuncture. I know it's working because even though I haven't ovulated, I can feel stuff going on in there ever since I started treatment.

I went in on Tuesday for my first appointment and it was great, I felt stuff right after the appointment too. I was on day 4 of my cycle but I could feel some cramps when I wasn't having any that day and then I did feel my ovaries a bit, plus some sensations in the other areas I had needles.

Next week I go back and she will introduce herbs to me as well. What herbs are you on? Do you get them from your acupuncturist or do you get them seperately online at the website you mentioned?
