Hi all vegans/vegetarians/raws/fruiterians etc : )

I have recently gone vegan. I´ve excluded all animal products. I am used to a really low calorie diet and rough workouts since I come from the crossfit/longdistancrunner scene.

I´ve found that I now eat a lot like 2000 cals/day or more but only veg, sourdoughbread, fruits, soy- and I lose weight? What is this??? I am happy of course but is it just temporary? And it must have happened to somebody else out there? Please tell me about it and what I can expect happening? Thanks

Sounds like you're losing muscle and need to get some protein into your diet. If you're still working out like crazy, you need to up your calories.

Well, I lift weights 3 times a week. I am a crossfitter so I do that too and you know how excrutiating hard those workouts are..... I think I am strong since I take my own bodyweight (58kg) in kneepress and about 65 kg in lats. I do chinups x 5 in a row. So, no I dont think so, but thanks for the reply!

You can be strong and still be losing muscle mass. Make sure you eat back ALL the calories you burn (especially since you aren't overweight) and be sure to eat a variety of foods. Include beans, nuts, and whole grains in your diet to get a variety of protein (amino acids) and a variety of vitamins. Humans cannot sustain on fruits and vegetables alone!

I think about a whole new set of food groups as a vegan (which I have been for 8 years). I always choose a variety of foods from each of these five groups: nuts, beans, grains, fruits, vegetables. Since you don't have dairy and meat as food groups anymore, rather than just exclude them, you need to REPLACE them with something else. Do lots of research before going vegan and make sure you are staying healthy!!... especially with how much weight you are lifting!!

    Good luck :)

Sorry for being so unclear. I wanted to know if you have experienced losing weight even on cal plus? Because I never seen this before. This is my question: Have you experienced weightloss even if you ate more cal, than you expended, on a plant based diet??

This maybe because previous to being vegan you ingested lots of saturated fats. Most of these fats are in animal products like cheese, milk, and meat. I have found that since I became vegan I can be less strict about what I eat and still lose fat and build muscle. I lost lots of belly fat but have had an easier time gaining muscle (I am a fitness instructor as of last week). I used to have this bloated nasty pregnant looking belly when I ate animal products no matter what I did. Now I don't and am rarely bloated. Friends have commented on how I've lost weight, while I've only lost about 5lbs, it was pure fat and I've been gaining muscle.

To Raiderchicket: Thanks! That sounds really great. 5 pounds is a lot if you re already lean, good for you. Thats about the amount I am looking to lose also. For me its such an eyeopener, I don´t know what to think because I ve been so hypnotized by the fitness industry. Now I take no animal proteins but seems stronger.

To Metalvegan: No I still don´t think so. I am looking to lose weight so no I will not be eating more cal than I do now. Ithink I have the nutritionals covered : ) But thanks for your concern.
