Building Foot Strength

So I'm a minimalist shoe girl. I wear Merrel pace gloves. They have a zero drop, so they're definitely pretty decent as far as getting me in contact with the ground. That being said I'm considering incorporating some totally barefoot stuff into my running. Right now I'm training for my first ever half, so I don't want to do too much too soon as far as barefoot goes. I usually do a long walk on Sundays.Today I took my shoes off for as long as I could tolerate during my walk (roughly five minutes or so). I even tested out a light shuffle barefoot. The trail I was on was paved, but still had gravelly parts, so it was slow going. But I figured that maybe I'll just start with incorporating barefoot walking here and there into my walks and build up from there. Any other ideas on building foot strength? Any good links, sites, resources you've found helpful. I'm reading Born to Run right now and that's of course very inspiring.

  • Hey, I see that you posted this a couple months ago, but if you still want foot strength exercises to do, you can check out Michael Sandler's book, Barefoot Running. It's basically a barefoot running handbook, and its full of training tips and exercises and such. I've been doing this one exercise where you try to pick up and hold a golf ball with your toes for 5 or ten seconds, repeating 10-20 times per foot. I've only been doing it about 5 days and my toes are already stronger and more flexible :)
