Keto and DS ( Duodenal Switch )
Anybody out there have a duodenal switch who is exploring or living a ketogenic lifestyle? I'd love to hear from you! I am very, very new to exploring it. I got my DS about 6 years ago. I didn't lose all my wt and I have regained about 40 lbs. I am moving toward a ketogenic diet to address that wt gain and hopefully lose past my lowest wt loss (got down to 183 lbs, now up to 225).
A keto diet, of course, includes high fat. And, anyone who has had DS surgery significantly malabsorbs fat! By my figuring, that means for a DS'er to follow a keto diet, we might have to increase our fat intake by 500% above what it would be for a non-DS'er on a ketogenic diet. And, of course, that can be challenging.
So, I'm starting this group for people with DS to share their experiences and strategies, etc, etc, of exploring wt loss of re-gained wt after DS surgery, and specifically explore that wt loss via a ketogenic diet.
As for myself, I'm going to take my transition into a ketogenic diet lifestyle very, very slowly by making small lifestyle shifts. I'm not planning on achieving this in a month or even two month. I'd be happy in making a somewhat full transition in 6 to 8 months. From what I understand, it takes 12 weeks just to fat-adapt. So, I'm taking this slow and just trying to make changes that feel good and that will last.
I look forward to hearing from you!
