  • This thread inspired me to do the experiment. I weighed 3 five-second sprays of PAM. The results were 6, 6 and 7 grams, so a one second spray of PAM weighs 1.27 g, which corresponds to 11 calories using the standard factor of 9 cal/g for fat. I used two different cans, one partially used and one unused, and the results…
  • If you are trying to maximize protein intake, plain non-fat greek yogurt is better than the "fruit on the bottom" types, which have sugar in them and less protein. I add stevia to non-fat yogurt and mix in some raspberries or blueberries. That has the additional benefit of providing a couple grams of fiber.
  • The USDA database gives a "refuse" percentage for many foods which corresponds to the inedible portion. For bananas, it's 36%. Therefore, the edible fruit in the OP's 130 g banana is about 83.2 g. The edible portion of the banana, again from the USDA data, has a calorie content of 89 cal/100 g, so the OP's banana has 74…
  • According to the USDA database, 1/4 cup of dry lentils (48 g) contains 165 calories.
  • 2990 calories seems much to high. When you set up your goals in MFP, it asks for height, weight and age and activity level, and calculates a daily calorie intake based on your basal metabolic rate. It also asks for your weight-loss goal in lb/week, and deducts 500 calories from your daily calorie intake goal for each…
  • You might ask them how much dough and cheese they use in a pizza. The kitchen probably knows that. Might even be able to tell you the weight of toppings. From those you can estimate calories.
  • As epido said, "What do you mean when you say plateau?" My conjecture is that daily, weekly and even monthly weight variation due to factors other than calorie deficit is too great compared to expected weight loss to accurately discern a true "plateau" over any period less than a month or even longer. I have been using MFP…
  • My wife has been on WW and I have been using MFP since last May. She has lost about 30 lb and I have lost 50, both reaching our goal weights. It has helped that we prepare most of our food, and I have been calculating calories and points for each, so we can design recipes and meals to meet both our requirements. WW is in…
  • Not clear why you would arbitrarily select 1000 calories/day, when one of the principal functions of MFP is to calculate that for you. When you set up your profile in MFP, it asks for weight, height, gender, age and activity level, and uses that to calculate your daily caloric requirement to maintain your current weight.…
  • Some suggestions. Have the cereal with raspberries for breakfast, the spinach salad for lunch, and an apple and banana for snacks, and you've got your 30 g of fiber for the day: Kellogs Bran Buds: 20 g fiber/half-cup Navy/Kidney Beans: 18 g fiber/cup (cooked) Apples: 5 g fiber/ 200 g apple Green Peas: 7.5 g fiber/cup…
  • The USDA quantities in the USDA database are calculated on the basis of the edible portion of a food. So, to accurately determine the calories in a food, you need to subtract the unedible portion, or "refuse" in the USDA terminology. The USDA database lists nutritional content for five varieties of apples "raw, w/ skn",…
  • Should have noted that weight is in kg, age is in years, and HR is in beats/minute.
  • We have a treadmill that has hand grips that measure HR. It is completely unreliable. It also has a chest strap that communicates to the treadmill directly, which may be accurate but I do not use that because I have a Garmin GPS with HRM. The Garmin software provides a calorie count, but it is biased low, so I calculate…
  • Any lean meat, assuming you are looking to lose or maintain weight. The operative term is "lean". 96% lean/4% fat ground beef has 127 calories/100g. 80/20 ground beef has 254, twice as much. Lean ham has about 100 cal/100 g. Fish and seafood are excellent sources of low-calorie protein. A useful resource for comparing…
  • You give your weight as 198 lb and age as 19 yrs. Assuming you are 5 ft 6 in, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is about 72 kcal/hr. The Compendium of Physical Activities (https://sites.google.com/site/compendiumofphysicalactivities/) which gives metabolic factors (METs) for a wide range of physical activities, lists a MET…
  • MFP seems to have made several changes to the recipe entry function, and not for the better. The option to use the "old" recipe builder has disappeared. When deleting an ingredient it is now necessary to click a pop-up confirming the intent to delete. It also seems to be much slower. In any case, the MFP recipe entry…
  • No need to peel beets before roasting. Sometimes helps to use a wet paper towel to remove skin after roasting.
  • Spray beets with cooking spray, wrap in aluminum foil and roast in the oven at 400 F for 45 minutes (until a paring knife slides in easily) . Cool, peel and dice. Dice a dill pickle. Mix beets, pickle and capers (whatever ratio you wish). Dress with Worcestershire sauce and a bit of the caper juice.
