Am I the only one concerned about the OP's knees if he is setting his resistance on the highest setting? That just seems like a ticking time bomb. OP, try working on keeping your cadence higher on a lower resistance setting. Your knees will thank you, and you will be waaay better off if you decide you love the whole bike…

I love my panaracer paselas for gravel races, I bet they'd be perfect for your needs.

The last time I tried, I made it 50 meters (25 meter pool).

Is it a fixed gear, or a single speed (the two seem to get confused a lot)? If it's a fixed gear, it means that you can't coast, and must keep pedaling to keep moving. If that's the case, you won't be able to recover as easily on the bike because of the constant pedaling. A long race for those on a fixed gear bike (in a…

When it comes to climbing: “It doesn’t get any easier; you just go faster.” —Greg LeMond. Totally true. This is my third season "seriously" cycling. Three years ago, I was excited when I rode 20 miles. Now, a typical weeknight ride is around 30 miles. I'm racing, and loving it. So keep at it. It gets better! I can't even…

@jgnatca - you don't know that. Maybe he is super weak, and she's an athlete that is interested in switching her routine. You know what they say about assumptions...

Crossing the street is dangerous too. So is driving. Ditch the trainer, and quite possibly the gym. UI'm guessing the only reason that he doesn't want you to do Stronglifts is that you won't need him for long after, and therefore he's out a client, and paycheck. Find someone to teach you the correct form, and have fun with…

If your ride is not on Strava, it didn't happen. :p

On the days that I'm not really feeling it, but have a workout scheduled, I tell myself that I'll go for 15 minutes, and if I'm still not feeling it, I probably need the rest day, and can go home. 9 times out of 10, by the time my 15 minutes are up, I've forgotten about my deal, and am enjoying my workout. And when I'm…

As the Red Cross teaches all the swim students, "Swim with a buddy in a supervised area". Also, be sure that it's legal to swim across the lakes. Where I live, people get ticketed and fined if they are swimming outside of the beaches.

Competitive swimmer girls don't shave their legs for the whole season, and then shave before the big meet of the year. Just pretend to be one of them.

My gym only has one power rack as well. Yesterday, a dude was there for 45 minutes trying to learn how to do the shoulder to ohp. When I asked him how much longer he was going to be, he just glared at me. After hoovering for another 10 or so minutes, he finally left. This was at peak workout time right after work. It's…

I only use Swedish goggles. Run about $4/ pair. Have had the same pair for many, many years.

If you do switch to breaststroke, please be sure that you are doing your kick correctly, if you're doing that much with a poor kick, you'll ruin your knees in no time.

If you buy one thing, buy a pair of tri shorts. You can get them online, or at a place like REI. Don't wear anything underneath them. They dry quickly, and will help you not chafe on the bike or during the run. I had a friend try the shorts over a swimsuit thing, and could barely finish the bike leg she was so chaffed up…

I agree with everyone above about going to your local bike shop. And if the terrain is more bumpy, you may also want to get a pair of padded gloves. You can find them for pretty good prices online, and they'll help prevent your hands from hurting or going numb when riding over bumps.

If you're starting from scratch, you may want to invest in a few sessions with a personal trainer. They'll be able to help you figure out what you are doing, and show you the correct way to do the movements, so you don't get injured. Other than that, find something you enjoy doing. Try a bunch of different things at first.…

New Rules for Women has alternatives for a lot of the lifts needing gym equipment, so you may want to check that book out. I've really liked it. I finally started the program last week, and am really enjoying it!

Both of these. YES. Also, as a beginner swimmer, please line up in the back of your pack for the swim. The last tri that I did, a bunch of not so strong swimmers ran out in front of me, and it is just plain annoying trying to get around them. I actually swam OVER a couple of them because they wouldn't let me by them and I…

I hate the way high school PE works. The year I was an All Conference swimmer, I got a "C" in our swimming class because my stroke was "too competitive".

Have you tried physical therapy? That would probably be very beneficial.

That looks like an awesome CX course Wolfman! Makes me long for cross season.

Not dumb questions at all! You should be pedaling with the ball of your foot. As you get better, and more addicted, you might consider getting bike shoes and clipless pedals, but wait until you are super comfortable on the bike first. Biking is a pretty decent core workout, especially if you do anything off-road on gravel…

Your knees may be sore because your saddle is too low. Your leg should be almost straight (but relaxed) on the down stroke. As for the back-end soreness, I'd really recommend going to a local bike shop and getting fit for a saddle. And just to warn you, it will probably be more narrow than you'd expect. Those big padded…
