I usually get unusual numbers if I leave my heart rate monitor in the car throughout the day prior to going to the gym when the temperature is below 15 degrees. I get weird numbers until it warms up during the workout.

I use a HRM every time that I work out. It helps me know I am exercising with the correct amount of effort. I would recommend it. It is a very good tool to know that you are doing the right thing. It also does a better job of estimating calories.

I have the Garmin 510 which came with the speed, cadence and heart rate monitor. It is not quite as nice as the Garmin 1000 but I still like it quite a bit. I do enjoy seeing the stats it provides on Garmin Connect as well as Strava.
