I only track if my weight is starting to creep up. I'm not a big fan of looking up all my food. I logged my food through Thanksgiving and Christmas because I was on the edge of my goal range. Now I've gone from the top edge to the bottom edge without even trying very hard. Not logging won't change that, but I mind less…

Personally, I ignore BMR because I don't spend all day in bed in a fasted state. In theory, BMR can give you some idea of how many calories you burn per day, but people tend to get hung up on it. The number MFP gives you is based on how many calories you can expect to burn in a day through normal activity and then they…

If anyone has, I think they will plead the 5th.

If you want to do the vegan/vegetarian thing because of your religious beliefs or something, that's your business, but meat is good for you. It is a balance source of protein and it also puts fat into your diet, which can help to maintain hunger. If you are going to choose not to eat meat then you need to find a way to…

The body fat reading is probably wrong, but for what it is worth when you gain water weight your body fat percentage goes down.

Exactly. Some of us frequently burn more than a thousand calories while exercising. That rate alone would result in two pounds lost per week and if there were added on top of a deficit it could be four pounds. Some people are even more active. If you deplete your glycogen while exercising and don't replace it you could…

I don't count it. Only a small amount sticks to the food and it is impossible to know how much.

Yeah, good luck trying to milk those soybeans.

It simply means that you eat less on one day so you can eat more on another. If you normally eat 1500 calories, but one day you eat 1000, then you have 500 "in the bank" so sometime later you could eat 2000 calories in a day and still be on target. Keep in mind though that this only works between weigh-ins. Once you weigh…

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Technically, there are excess calories that people consumed years ago that they are only now making up for, but in the meantime they carried that extra food around as fat. For weekly weight loss, it isn't going to make much difference. If you are eating for another reason…

Obviously, you don't sell diet books by telling people that they should eat like normal but cut out the snacks, but as kommodevaran pointed out, this is essentially what the 16/8 diet is all about. There's no reason it shouldn't work as long as you don't increase the size of your meals to compensate for the lack of snacks.
-
The intent of what is being said is true, but it is technically not correct. The reality is that the balance of calories in and calories out is what makes the difference. We can't pick one above the other.

I like a good pun.

Just trust the math. A 3,500 calorie deficit equals 1lb lost not matter what fluctuations occur on the scale before you see it.
-
Actually, that's just one of those things that people say as a way to encourage their friends to keep trying to lose weight. Muscle weight increases much more slowly than fat. It is more likely that you are retaining water for some reason. Keep eating at a deficit and give it a few more weeks before you start worrying…

That could be because you're still at that stage where you have unrealistic expectations out of marriage.

If you're inside, I'm not sure it is possible not to be drenched in sweat. Outside, I'm rarely drenched in sweat even in the heat of summer.

Considering that I'm not logging food at all right now and I have had times that I have gone for over a year without gaining weight while not logging, I would say that it isn't very bad at all. Just guessing, I would say that you will see a large weight gain when you get home, but after two or three weeks you'll discover…

I heard that only women were allowed to change their minds.

I've been eating food my whole life. I know what food I like. I don't think it takes much to figure out that what works for me is to eat the food that I like. The only thing hard is making sure you stop eating the food you like before you exceed your calorie limit.
-
It is unlikely because people don't want to do what they need to do to lose the weight and get healthy. But there's a big difference between unlikely and impossible. In fact, anyone can do it if they are willing to.
-
Technically, that is probably true since we burn more calories cooling our bodies, but I doubt it is significant enough to be worthwhile.
-
That is true to a point, but the concept behind low carb is that you are trying to inhibit the ability of the body to process food. Because the quickest source of energy isn't available it has to rely on slow sources of energy, so even though the same number of calories are available, you can't get them as quickly. This…

My view on calorie counting is that no matter how accurately someone thinks they are tracking their calories there is enough margin for error they they may not be. If your calorie intake is resulting in your staying the same weight then you can lower your intake and you will see weight loss. You can view it as you don't…

I've had someone tell me that anything you eat within two hours after a bicycle ride don't count.
-
My rest days tend to be based on when other stuff crowds into my schedule. My typical schedule looks like this: Monday - 90 minute bicycle ride Tuesday - 90 minute bicycle ride (60 minutes if I have a committee meeting) Wednesday - 60 minutes on Zwift (church night) Thursday - 90 minute bicycle ride Friday - Week 1 and…

How long salt stays in the body is dependent on a number of things. If you are exercising you may sweat it out. If you are eating enough potassium then the salt may stay around, but the water won't.

You might consider using using 9" plates. 9" plates used to be typical for dinner plates. Now we're up to 12". A 9" plate holds about 800 calories while a 12" plate will hold 1900 calories. I bought 9" plates because I had heard that you eat less if you use them. I had might doubts because it seemed like a trick. Even…

Not all guys are "Momma's boys". If someone tried to force me do something, my natural reaction would be to refuse to do it. As for guys encouraging guys, it seems like I've done more to encourage guys to lose weight by just posting my bicycle rides on Facebook than I ever have by telling a guy he needs to lose weight.…

I went for years knowing I was overweight and even knowing what I needed to do to lose weight, but I was kind of hoping that the weight would go away by itself. I didn't step on the scales because I didn't want to admit to how heavy I was. The motivation to lose weight came from myself, but I think the realization that my…
