  • I've done the same thing over the last few months and come up with the same sort of numbers, relative to my weight at the time of course. It just seems like a completely mad number, so I assumed I was working it out incorrectly.
  • My numbers above are based on my real data. I generally don't use MFP to enter my calorie burns because it just gives silly numbers. But that's irrelevant to my calculations anyway. Because:* it's impossible to get an accurate exercise burn number from any app, machine or website anyway * I seem to burn calories faster…
  • I do. And I know that if I have a day that seems like I do nothing but pee, then within a day or two I'll see a decent loss. How much I drink seems not to be what's making me pee - I pretty much drink the same amount every day, but some days I'll pee 5 times, and others (seriously!) 25. It's always been like this for me,…
  • Geneen Roth says that for every diet there is an equal and opposite binge. Restricting yourself is a lot like winding your appetites up like a coil. At some point that coil is going to bounce back with a ferocity that matches how tightly you wound it. Don't beat yourself up about it - it's perfectly normal behaviour. It's…
  • This is all fab. Thanks!
  • Had that yesterday, but swapped the protein powder for peanut flour. O. M. G. Try it!
  • I've not been to the USA but I've talked with people who have, and I'm a Brit, so in can give you a couple of pointers. Yes, the portions are smaller. Probably a lot less than what you're used to. Because of this, asking for a doggie bag is not really done here. But the food does have more taste, I've heard. Mealtimes vary…
  • These are all great ideas, thank you! I have considered making bigger meals and only eating a portion.at a time. (I batch cook a lot anyway.) But that wouldn't work this time. Mostly because the idea is to try to eat what I'm hungry for at that moment, and I probably won't be hungry for the same thing 3 or 4 times a day.…
  • Try this: Make up a pack of sugar free Jello with half the amount of water. Substitute the other half for Fat Free Greek Yoghurt. When it sets you have a really good fruit flavour pudding. Mine comes to 36 cals for a quarter of the whole thing, which is a big portion!
  • If your body tells you it's genuinely hungry, eat. Ignoring those hunger cues can screw up your appetite. It doesn't matter, for weight loss at least, when you eat. Eat when you're hungry. And if you're not hungry, don't eat. Simple.
  • At 13 stone you could probably still eat more and lose weight. The MFP calorie allowances are meagre, and they also spit out 1200 for just about everyone who says they want to lose 2 pounds a week. 2 pounds a week is aggressive unless you are actually clinically obese, which you aren't. It's likely that if you start out a…
  • You used to be in tune with your hunger cues. Then by dieting (aggressively, possibly not eating when you were actually hungry?) and feeling like you had to eat more than you were hungry for, or perhaps when you weren't hungry, you lost touch with your hunger cues. You used to be able to intuitively eat the right amount of…
  • Excellent advice! I'll remember this one, next time I find myself nose deep in the biscuit tin. :)
  • Yes! This! Can we just make every new MFP member read this? I go over all. The. Time. Sometimes massively. No doom yet. :p I have my daily cals set higher than what MFP suggests for just a pound a week, but lose about 6 and a half pounds a month, consistently. To me, it seems to be what you do AFTER you go over your daily…
  • Carby breakfasts, even oats, make me ravenous by 10am. Getting at least 30g of protein at breakfast, and a a good few grams of fibre keeps me going until just before 12. For me, the fix is berries, protein powder, psyllium husk powder blended to make a protein smoothie. Sometimes I need a mid-morning protein snack too, and…
  • I used to do great through the day and then ruin all that hard work in the evening when I craved carbs and ended up going over my allotted calorie. So now I plan ahead, and have smaller meals so I can leave about 30% of my calories for snacks. Half of those are usually eaten in the evening. The smaller meals are packed…
  • That you go through clothing sizes faster and faster as you shrink. You're either going to have to spend a lot of money, OR, regularly visit second hand shops, OR not care about walking around in public with a baggy bum and the off-the-shoulder look. Oh, and nobody told me about the off-the-shoulder thing! Tops don't just…
  • 5k after only three weeks is absofrickinlutely amazing. Well done! :D Your wife's reaction smacks of either insecurity, or guilt or annoyance that she isn't doing, or doesn't have the opportunity do so the same. Talk to her about it. Maybe she'd be really supportive under other conditions.
  • It takes practice to avoid those sort of temptations, but it is possible. I've learned some tricks along the way, from lots of sources, that seem to have finally clicked and have really helped me this time round. Amazingly, I can now walk past a cookie without it jumping into my mouth. One tactic is to very loudly (inside…
  • Heh. I was going to post the same thing. I know that we all burn differently, but I'm still surprised at the difference between MFP's calculations and reality. For me, MFP suggests 1450 net calories to lose half a kilo a week. I actually average a net of about 1800. That includes eating back half my exercise calories. I've…
  • I had the same problem, and I probably always will, but I got better at dealing with it. I've found that eating healthier food at mealtimes, with plenty of protein and fibre cuts down the cravings. Exercise helps. Having a small portion helps. Waiting ten minutes helps. Planning my day to include things I crave helps.…
  • I swapped carb snacks for protein snacks and that helps - I'll have ham, edamame, cheese or surimi instead of a cereal bar for example. Turkey has amazing amounts of protein, as do Greek yoghurt and quark. Must admit, I've found it hard to get enough without using bars and powders, but I'm slightly lazy and have a sweet…
  • It looks to me like you're doing well! All I can add is that at your weight, if you have patience, you could eat a lot more than you are now and still lose at a nice rate. Everyone's body is different, but I started this diet at about your weight and lost about 1.5 pounds a week eating about 1800-2000 calories a day…
  • Yep, banoffee pie for lunch. Nom!
  • Amazon in the UK - some flavours are under £18 for 12 at the minute, and that can also include postage.
  • Personally I think we have a knee jerk reaction to anything that's not a real meal. Like most things, if you use your noggin, you can certainly incorporate weight loss shakes into your diet. Used as a replacement for two meals a day, I'm not sure that they will give a sustainable weight loss, because of all the things we…
  • If you try to go all out, all the time, and straight away, it will seem really hard. Make one change at a time. For example, I kept my diet the same, but went walking 4 times a week. Then I did Couch to 5K. And THEN I had a go at not eating all the biscuits after dinner. And once I was doing that most nights, I started…
  • I've found that my sleep has improved loads with a healthier diet and more exercise. I do also take a magnesium supplement (but in the mornings along with all my other pills, otherwise I'll forget it). I found that on bad nights, an over the counter sleeping pill containing a big dose of antihistamine works. In the UK this…
  • Nope. Not for me. In fact, the bubbles seem to fill me up and curb my hunger a bit. I feel sad for people who, on top of trying to cut down calories, reduce carbs, give up sugar and eschew fat, ALSO think they have to start drinking yucky cucumber water instead of diet pop. Because that just sounds miserable to me. That…
  • I just realised, looking through my diary, that what also might have helped me is that I graze. I tend to eat small meals, but lots of snacks. This is a tactic to stop me over eating, and, because I feel like I'm always eating, I don't feel like I'm dieting, so I tend not to fall off the wagon. But maybe grazing on small…
