  • Maybe… I have an appointment tomorrow to "talk" over my A1C test. It's the first time I've had that test, and so I'm reluctant to accept a diagnosis of diabetes. Six months from now will be another story.
  • Go ethnic. Regional recipes taste different and keep food interesting. We always—almost always—have one Mexican and one Chinese night each week. Throw in Korean, Thai, Italian, etc. and food never has to be boring.
  • Sometimes it helps to just go with the flow. All the years Otter cooked all the dinners (I used to be a workaholic) she had a rule of 3. If there weren't 3 people that liked the dish, the recipe got tossed. That way no one person had a veto, but the recipe file got filled with good stuff. Now, with a smaller family, that…
  • I think that would not be the right goal for me. I am perfectly happy to come in under my targets on calories, fats, and carbs. Challenging myself to increase my intake to reach zero does not seem like a great idea. If it works for you…go for it.
  • I think the problem is that the financial plan for Weight Watchers encourages you to feel that weight loss is episodic. Lose the weight and you're done. It doesn't work like that. Weight loss and fitness are life style changes that have to be forever if they're going to work. That's where I think the logging available here…
  • In the song I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, the kid sings: "Oh, what a laugh it would have been, If Daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night!" So the kid [supposedly] thinks her mother is having a affair…why in the heck is she so happy? Isn't this the kind of thing that sends kids to therapy when they grow…
  • Spices make anything tasty. That once a year when I grill a steak, it doesn't need anything to make it delicious. The rest of the year I spice. I make a lot of curries. Curry comes in many flavors as they are made everywhere from India to Indonesia, and every region has their own multitude of flavors. At the heart of it, a…
  • Hunh…I had 6 cal/gram stuck in my head from somewhere. Gotta clean out the cobwebs occasionally. Thanks.
  • Also remember that everything is an estimate. If, after a couple of weeks of logging everything, and coming in under your caloric target and still not losing weight, you can always drop your calorie goal. Just do it slowly, there aren't any quick answers, this is the rest of your life you are talking about.
  • Well, it wasn't hard to figure out where to put a recipe. :D Thanks MFP, for thinking of this! Arroz con Pollo
  • No. Have you ever said to yourself, What in the H___ am I doing?!?
  • Thing is…I have no idea how good a cook you are. I have tasted some "healthy" foods that even the dog (and he's a lab—they'll eat anything!) would eat. OTOH, both Otter and I cook healthy all the time and we love the food we cook. Otter taught me a lot about eating healthy since she has been trying to lose weight for far…
  • Sugar is sugar as far as calories are concerned. 6 calories/gram. The health effects of sugar are far more complex (and less well known) than is usually admitted. blogs.scientificamerican.com/brainwaves/2013/07/15/is-sugar-really-toxic-sifting-through-the-evidence/ IMO, binging on any food is not good. We need to eat a…
  • Nope. Work has played the same mix for the last six months (as long as I've been there). The switch after Thanksgiving to Christmas music is welcome. Even if some of the songs are among the worst renditions I have ever heard, the change from the regular tape is refreshing!
  • Yes. Have you ever done something you are ashamed of?
  • I tried a couple of pedometer apps. None of them worked well with my phone. On a counted walk of 500 steps they all logged about 130 steps. Since other people do seem to find that they work, I assume the problem is with the sensor in my particular phone (Moto G). So digging through the junk drawers I found an old simple…
