  • @snowyne and @kgirlhart - Great races @_nikkiwolf_ - Good luck on your upcoming race. @kristinegift - Hope that back is better soon. Sounds miserable. Fabulous day for a run - love the scent of honeysuckle in the air right now. So I went 6 instead of 5 miles - but left plenty in the tank since it is supposed to be…
  • @snowyne- That is an awesome pace! You should be very proud! I ran my first 5K 2 years ago at about the same age and finished in 32 minutes. Not that it means much, but you already have me beat, lol. And I am sure you are feeling much better from the training - wins all the way around!
  • @MNLittleFinn - fabulous run - you are going to be really well prepared for that first marathon! @zdyb23456 - Love it when everything falls into place with the world during a run! :) @WhatMeRunning - So, is your company hiring??? Love that you are getting to add on that Half. Sounds like a great time.
  • Finished my Half today and somehow managed to PR it, despite only getting in 2 runs that totaled about 8 miles in the 2 weeks since my Marathon. I am pretty pleased - 1:52:53. 16.4/80 miles done!
  • @Stowshew71, WhatMeRunning, MobyCarp, MNLittleFinn, and lporter229 Thank you all so much for the advice on recovery. I guess I mostly see the few crazy ones of you - like WhatMeRunning - who run back to back marathons all the time and so I didn't realize my reality was just the more normal human response, lol. It's great…
  • Ok - maybe this will help get me motivated again. I ran my first - and likely last - marathon a few weeks ago and I am struggling to get back into the routine, and routine for me is just 3 runs per week, lol. I guess I will go for 80 miles this month. 5/4 3.2 miles
  • I am one of the few who did not start with C25k - but I did something similar. My neighborhood had too many hills for me to be able to walk and run when it said - so I ran in the flat cul de sacs and slowly added parts of the hills until I could run the entire 3 mile loop and then started adding distance. The older you are…
  • The rational part of my brain knew what you posted was correct even before I read it- but I eventually had to hire a trainer to go to that section of the gym. I felt as if that was my "pass card" I still work out with a trainer once a week in the weight section but have no issues going over there on my own now. I am sure…
  • I have been joking that my recomp changed to a bulk cycle as well. I was supposed to be at maintenance but I think I have put on about 2 pounds in 2 months (water weight fluctuations make such a small amount difficult to pin down). I was keeping my protein high and doing a heavy weightlifting program - so I joke I was…
  • The amount of hormone released to the blood stream is minimal but may be slightly higher in the first few months, so I would suggest you hang in there and watch your diet. Progestin can cause some water weight retention and as the level goes down and your body adjusts you may feel better.
  • 47 and trying to add muscle but a little too scared to gain weight. I just finished taking off 35# to get to 137 (5'7). I have been maintaining at that with lifting and running. I have a beach trip in March and another trip in June. I do not want to look heavier than I am. I may try to just recomp until fall and then after…
  • I forgot to mention though, that I would NOT sign a one year contract for personal training without a fairly long trial period.
  • I have been using a personal trainer once a week for about 10 months - after injuring myself in my new running program. I let them know that I wanted to work only on strength and keeping myself injury free. It has definitely been worth it to me. I use the example that I do not go to weight watchers to lose weight - because…
  • I work out with a trainer lifting for 30 minutes a week and try to get in 2-3 heavy lifting sessions with Strong Lifts. That program is pretty quick (30-45 minutes). The trainer sessions are more lifting focused than HIIT but he keeps me moving from lift to lift enough and he uses higher reps (usually 2-3 sets of 8-12)…
  • I have no opinion on the calories burned portion of your question - other than it all is an estimate. On how it syncs from Garmin - yes, it does look for somewhat of a match and then adjusts. For instance, if I run 10 miles at a 9:05 mile pace, it will sync that I ran 91 minutes at a 10 min/mile pace - and then adjust the…
  • I have really started to wonder about this as I have lost weight. I only lost about 30# and I went from needing a Large or 12-14 - to needing a 2-4 and XS-S. I am 5'7 and 135-138#. I am not XS. It has really made me wonder what truly small women have to do. I suspect they are shopping in the kid department. On the other…
  • 5'7, small frame 170 when I started and wore 12 - 14 - and probably shopped in vanity sizing stores (US sizes) 137 now, size 2-4 at the same stores. 34-27-36. Still a little jiggly at the middle, but I have been weight training so my biggest problem is fitting my muscular thighs into pants that fit at the waist.
  • Running is great for weight loss - and I used it - with calorie counting and weight lifting at least once a week (running usually 3 times a week) to get that last 30 pounds off. I much prefer running to weight lifting personally and if that is your preference then you should capitalize on that.
  • I got rid of all of the old clothes in sizes that I never want to be ever again. I am having a harder time getting rid of some of the nice clothes that are in a size that I was just trying to get back down to - but now am several sizes smaller. I seemed to almost skip right over that size. I have boxed some of the suits…
  • yes and I work out with a trainer as well. Not trying to derail the topic though - so we can move on. Just was hoping for some help with a nerve compression issue that prevents me from bending my right elbow that much
  • I can keep my left hand on the weight and let my right hand straighten and since the weight is on a track, it will not fall.
  • I agree - a real MD and one who is not advertising about bhcg diets, cryo fat loss or selling supplements - or for that matter books or TV shows( Dr. OZ)
  • Well, I got so absorbed that I finished it all. I noted that someone said Smith machines were bad for squats. I will do some squats with weights in front of me - but if I want the weight on my shoulders, I almost have to use the Smith machine because my right hand goes numb pretty quickly with the elbow bent that far. If I…
  • tagging to finish reading later as there are now 11 pages. Thank you so much for this. I am a few pounds under my goal (but I did not have an ambitious goal - I did go from a size 12/14 to a size 6/8 though), but I am still rather flabby around the middle. I work out with a trainer once a week and run 3 times a week. I…
  • Sorry - I just clicked over and read your profile. You report that you did have bulimia when you were in your 20's. You may have more significant food issues and likely should see a therapist while starting this journey. This is not the type of thing that a general practice doctor is equipped to handle well
  • First - one occasion of binging does not mean you have an eating disorder. Trying to walk for 3 hours to make up for your bad decision also does not mean you have anorexia/bulimia. Second - I am not sure how much you weigh - but I also strongly suspect an overestimation of calorie burn for the walking. Third - If you are…
  • 46 y/o, 5'7 - started at 170#. Now at 148. GW was 150 with plans to adjust down after maintaining for a few months at the first goal. Trying to decide where I want to go. Thinking maybe of trying to hit my drivers license weight of 140#, but honestly if the 22# I lost stays lost - I am ok with whatever.
  • deleted since the question I was answering was further back in the post than I thought. Agree with the above post and would add "I went from Morbidly obese to six pack abs. Ask me anything" Also used to be a sticky post but now removed.
  • you look great! I was really happy when I started noticing my face thinning. One of the reasons I always avoided pictures was that double chin that I did not see in the mirror but almost always saw in a picture. It is pretty much gone now and having cheek bones be more prominent is nice as well.
  • nonfat greek yogurt with strawberries and nature valley protein granola- fast, easy and pretty easy on the macros I also like egg whites with spinach and tomatoes on a whole wheat bagel thin - sometimes with a slice of cheddar or pepper jack if I have time to cook. Or oatmeal As for the getting away from "breakfast foods"…
