Everyone has had a crap race, so don't dwell on it. I struggled a few times 2 years ago because I was having trouble getting my head together even though the body was ready (my dad had passed away). Just get back out there. Do you have another race on your schedule soon?

15-20 degrees is my threshold too, especially for a longer run. I hate cold weather! It bothers my joints before I even start (rheumatoid arthritis) and I hate my nose dripping the entire time. I am the oddball who likes the treadmill. I do have an arsenal of layering pieces and agree about keeping hands warm. My hands get…

Congratulations! I did my first Boston last year and it was one of the highlights of my life!

Sampling or finishing what my kids are eating, especially crusts of bread. Some days I feel like a garbage picker eating their sandwich crusts.

I still can't convince my mother in law that fat is not evil. When she goes on a "diet", they stock up on "low fat" precessed foods, like Snackwell cookies. Not that one can't occasionally enjoy a cookie, but eating more cookies than you normally would because they are "low fat", seems to defeat the purpose.

Congrats! You should be proud. Thanks for sharing--I love reading race recaps.

Love your story! You should be so proud of yourself. I bet you will soon be addicted to races--there is a fire within you!

I don't think you are a prick, but I also don't think you have all elements of my training presented in a post. I am usually quite healthy and I realize where I made mistakes. I would never advise a newer runner to run fast all the time. I was content for years doing my 10 minute miles. The OP asked how others got faster…

I think I mentioned this to you before, but I went from a 3:49 to a 3:14 marathon in 6 months. Yep, shaved 35 minutes off that bad boy! Part of it was my internal motivation. I had been so close to a BQ, but missed it. Secondly, I completely changed how I trained. The general rule is to do your long runs SLOW, like a…

! run with my 11 year old son anytime he wants to run. He has done several 5ks and one 10k. I do my own workout at a different time. He generally only runs for 20-25 minutes and is done. He is much, much slower than me, but I value the teaching opportunity and the fact that we are doing something together. For races that I…

Yep, when I ran my first marathon, the goal was just to finish. I thought I would be "one and done". Then I ran a couple more in between having 2 kids and I really wanted to break 4 hours--and I did. Then I went 4 years before running another marathon. The arthritis pain was too much and it took over a year to even get a…

I believe you can reach those goals! I first started running when I was in my mid-twenties. I ran my first marathon at 27 with a time of 4:14. I was so thrilled to run a marathon. My goal was to average a 10 min/mile pace. I ran a few more and then had to stop running for a couple of years because of rheumatoid arthritis.…
