Shiitake Mushroom Burgers with Miso Mayonnaise (no bun) & Roasted Sweet Potato. I love using Blue Apron and meal planning so all I have to do is reheat.

You know, I don't think I really thought about it all that much, but I haven't had any knee pain since I switched shoes. I mean, it wasn't too bad to begin with, but I would get occasional twinges or aches. I'm glad I'm not the only weirdo out there who didn't benefit from the standard advice ("get supportive shoes and…

I love stuff from Target. I don't have issues with them being see through or falling down. I wear some of my capri's all the time because I work from home, and even with that much wear, it took 4-5 years for one of the pairs to start to lose the grip in the waistband.

My PF is really non-traditional. I think mine is triggered mostly by very tight calf muscles. I think it helps to visit a sports-med doc if it's limiting your ability to get out and be active. Most people need supportive shoes or orthotics, but my solutions were very different. I owe most of these suggestions to a PT I was…

I think you guys are enabling my gear addiction. >:) I bought two new sets of shoes through amazon (known brand though, and I know my sizing). I'll have my current pair for outdoor city running, a pair for the gym, and a trail running pair. All this about 1 month after I did a serious decluttering and threw out tons of…

I <3 this idea!! Game-ify it and all of a sudden the grocery store is an entertaining way to earn a cool prize, rather than an epic pain in my *kitten*. Love love love this.

So if you want any inspiration, check out this guy's post. He mentions that he didn't like C25K so he made up his own goals, but mostly, it's just a feel-good story that'll get you out the door on a day when you want to stay in. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10537502/i-think-i-fixed-my-heart

I tried Starting Strength, but as a novice, I had better luck with the 5/3/1 (doing Boring But Big, 4days a week, similar to @jessef593 ). The squats on starting strength were too much for me as a beginner for some reason. If you aren't used to programming and all that, I'd recommend getting a book (either Starting…

Re: prepackaged meals I use Amy's meals (love the enchiladas and the lasagna). They usually run 300-350 cals. I can pronounce and understand everything on the ingredient list. Between that and evol brand stuff, I can usually feel good even if I'm stuck in a situation where I can't or don't want to meal prep. Those all have…

Sorry, this is long and has a tortured metaphor. Typing it out helped me realize why I miss rowing so much though. One of the things I learned when I was rowing was that you have to work backwards to figure out what the problems is. Like, if I have balance issues with my boat, I need to break it down - is it when…

The Zombies, Run! app I talked about might also be a bit much this early in your training, but part of what I like is that sometimes the intervals are "walk fast"/"walk slow" rather than "run"/"walk". Maybe you can use your C25K app that way the first week - do it as fast and slow walk intervals. After you feel like that's…

I know everyone is saying you are running too fast, and that could be true. I'm an insanely slow runner and when I started, everyone told me the same thing. I was at 4.0 mph on the dreadmill and I could walk or "jog" at that pace, but anything slower was walk only. I found that advice frustrating, but I get where it was…

Yikes! That's a limitation. Maybe a trip to NZ to try Aoraki / Mount Cook ? Or finding one of those altitude simulation training gyms, just to get a feeling for what it might be like. When I climbed my first 14,000ft peak, I was totally unprepared. I didn't know anything about the way altitude effects people. People I met…

I'm stuck inside for a few weeks (overseeing my dog's recovery from a wicked knee surgery; can't leave her alone to pull out staples or let her put weight on it) and am right now, at this very moment, researching bikes because I'm thinking about taking up biking this summer. I'm gonna have to consider rollers for times…

I know you said you live in steep hills, but elevation above sea level will impact you too. Can you train any at higher elevations (on vacations or in regular life)? I have no idea what I'm talking about really, but I have slowly and painfully hiked a few mountains that are over 14,000ft (4267.2m) above sea level. Some…

I already know that part. I've started doing one-leg romanian deadlifts and even on a stable surface, I wobble an awful lot! ;) I just want a way to quantify it. It helps me to have a goal like that so I can see improvement when my motivation starts to flag.

This attitude is why it took me so long to hire a trainer. I know that I can teach myself what I need to know, but I'm paying a professional because I don't want to spend my time doing that. I want to spend time with my family, outdoors doing stuff, working hard to be good at my job, home-making (I love nesting, it's so…

This also sounds AMAZING! I would never have thought I could get something like that from a trainer - that would be something I'd probably seek out a sports psychologist to work through or something. Honestly, I don't even know where I'd go to find this. Hold on to her. She sounds like she's worth her weight in rubies!

Chiro, accupuncture, massage, PT advice on what I need to strengthen to get around the injury. Taking a break from lifting big to focus on more cardio. Basically, using the time I'm injured to focus on something other than my usual goal. I always let cardio and endurance fall by the wayside because I don't love them. I'm…

I have a non-injury situation that has got me 'stuck' away from doing my activity (snowboarding) too. :( I told myself this is the time to explore one of those 'other' activities that I always de-prioritize because I want to do the fun stuff. So I'm spending some time learning Portuguese and stepping up intensity and…

I train alone when I lift heavy and prefer it that way. I do ask my husband to come out with me every once in a while (like every couple months) to watch my form. When I was getting really heavy with my lifts, I had him video record me once so I could see where I could help. He does the same thing by going to a gym where a…

I keep resisting the urge to weigh in. I'm trying to develop healthy habits that keep back pain and depression at bay. The chronic back pain is under control, and I'm getting better at identifying depression triggers and avoiding them. It would be lovely if I could do all this and weigh less, but I don't find myself…

THIS!!! This is probably the conversation I need to have with my PT.

This is what I think I'm getting right now. I work out with a partner and my trainer. When the partner isn't there, it becomes small talk. Right now, I'm still ok with that because it's helping me keep to the habit of getting to they gym at 5am. But after we get through the next week (so much personal life drama), I'm…

This is actually a retrospective study. They didn't follow people, they looked back at the records. Totally valid scientific method, and a pretty cost-effective one, but not nearly as powerful as the randomized prospective trial from the NEJM article. Worth considering when weighing the evidence.
-
FWIW: In that study, the outcomes of interest were set at 6 months and 12 months....but 1/3 of the PT group actually had surgery within 6 months. The conclusion found no difference 6 months after the subjects were randomized into one of the two groups. They did mention the problem with crossover subjects in the methods…

I totally 'read' this audiobook. It was on squats day though, and I find the last few reps distracting, so I had to go back and re-read some of it on OH press day....

I appreciate all the suggestions. I'm definitely interested in at least 20 g of protein, so while I like the taste of Special K bars or the like, they usually have sugar as one of the first ingredients. That means a ton of carbs, but very little protein (10-12g). @llaurenmarie I tried to look up the Vanilla PowerBar, but…
