Barbell training, that is, prioritizing the major lifts should come first if you have access and resources to train that way. All other exercises should become secondary and folded under the . A program like Starting Strength, or SL, would be a good investment of your training time. With that said, the machine and its…

This is accurate. I squat 3x, deadlift 1x, and train 5x a week. I'm 45 and I can keep pace with the intensity just fine.
-
After reading your experiences, I may never go equipped.
-
I may go geared in the future, but right now the horizon on my raw strength seems still distant. I want to make sure that I have traveled that expanse first.
-
Thanks for the clarification
-
I got that. I hope when you state "your" you are referring to "him" and not me since I lift raw.
-
We are indeed. I also volunteer at meets and contribute content to our state Instagram and Facebook
-
No kidding. We have these first timers who come into meets and set or break world records. (Wish I was one of them.) I'm on my third year of competing in powerlifting, and starting my second year in the USAPL. Was it you or Sonya that recommended I take the State leave ref test? I'm doing that next month. Yeah crazy strong…

I'm 45 and that a fear I share too, which is why last year sucked hex plates. Lost a year as I got older. That's awesome! I didn't bother to check where I rank with M1 Raw Masters my age. Maybe I'll do that.

I like to eat pop tarts in front of the physique competitors at the gym. You have abs. I have Pop Tarts. And when they do, squat it's probably better they didn't. Saw enough bro-squats dropping in on a more physique orientated gym yesterday to last a lifetime. ---- Zilla is referring to a geared lifter at his gym hassling…

@bbell1985 Have you tried eating a banana with drinking coffee? :p
-
Thank you and thanks for the extra background info. Hope you find someone that works for you. I've tried PWO but found coffee to be just all need since The majority of my training was at 4am.

It's more of a "get off my lawn" comment.

We're iron nerds, we can't help it. When I am queried by those interested if they are strong enough to compete in powerlifting, I tell them yes, but you'll never be as strong as you want to be, but there is only one way to test how strong you are now and that is too compete.
-
And once we reach a certain level, we just want to get stronger. And stronger again.
-
I've been training off and on for 27 years and we never needed a pre-workout nostrum to train. Rub some dirt in it and be a real man. :p
-
Oh yeah, currently I'm ranked 338 out of 828 of all male lifters in the USAPL. Right in the middle of the pack. I've never worked so hard at anything to be just average. Lol
-
Thank you @juliewatkin ! I appreciate it. It's been steady gains, sans injury. At least you haven't backslide, but plateauing sucks.
-
Finally results posted from the State Open. And I'm so happy to see that my Wilks -- excluding the Wolf Open where I was injured -- improved 11 points! I'm not quite batting 400 yet, but I'll get there now I'm injury free. I realize that for a guy my size, I'm relatively not that strong. Last year was kind of a lost year.…

I have been forever patiently waiting for the USAPL National Office release the officials from the January 28th Wisconsin State Meet, but it's been almost a month and nothing and I wanted to give an update. now that I have pictures. As you may remember, I came off injury to compete in this meet starting 16 weeks out, from…

Buy a TRX (or the equivalent ripoff I bought at Aldi) for $15. Or get a set of rings. Inverted Rows, push-ups, pull-ups, etc

Generally, Any back squatting, preferably with a barbell (not Smith machine) should be your primary movement. Load progressively. All other variations i.e. Smith, leg extensions, presses, etc., should be done afterwards and at lower weights for more reps. Load these progressively too.

Mobility is a cruel master.

I haven't but if they have the classes you want that are not offered anywhere else outside a gym environment (like Zumba taught at a community center) then go for it.

425 lbs back squat 320 lbs front squat I'm not an Olympic lifter, (but I do high bar squat) so I'm not all that concerned with my front squat. Tip: don't wear Olympic shoes when front squatting, go flat shoe or socks, The Olympic shoes pitch you forward and the bar wants to pull you forward
-
I have pain pressing overhead from the front rack position with a barbell. This affects all Olympic lifts and accessories. In addition, any barbell row will cause the same pain in the front delts, forearms, and biceps. As recommended above, pressing with dumbbells maintaining neutral position in the wrists allows one to…
