Thanks for the alternatives and suggestions! I haddone a basic weights routine (squats, deadlift, military press, chest press, biceps, triceps, abs) a couple times a week for years up until two years ago when I mysteriously developed an injury (sacroiliac joint dysfunction). I ended up dropping all weight training while…

One thing I've come to realize is a difference between me and a naturally slim person (and I think this documentary reinforces this) is that when confronted with the question "Could I or should I eat?" my answer is pretty much always YES! whereas an easily slim person often answers no, and only yes in limited…

When I was a kid, I hated anything green, so when we'd go to Ponderosa for the salad bar after church on Sundays, I'd always get a pile of shredded cheese, ham cubes, and croutons topped with ranch dressing.

I've determined that doing a recomp is probably what I need. I'm at a weight where I'm reasonably comfortable (5'5", 143 lb) ... but I have a little more fat/flab than I like. This is really the top of the weight range I'm happy with though. I'm eating around 1900-2000 calories and it's just clear that I'm not going to eat…

I'm 5'5" and 144lbs. On days I'm just active running around but don't do formal exercise, I maintain at around 2000 calories.

height: 5'5" current weight: 145 goal weight: 130 how many calories you eat a day: 1600-1900. I aim for about 1/2 lb loss a week. I'm into slow, steady, sustainable loss. how much you exercise: 40min-60min a day what types of exercises you do: Right now, Mon is 45 min bootcamp, Tue and Thur is jog 3 mi, Wed and Sat is…

If you're just using an app, none are going to be that accurate. I recently got a Garmin Vivosport which tracks heart rate, GPS, and steps, and I'm loving that. FitBit also has some devices that are helpful.

I log regular yoga as low impact aerobics and power yoga as aerobics - general. You don't get calories credit for strength training, and I am definitely burning calories. Those choices appear to result in numbers that are about right.

I did a similar site, DietBet, to lose 15 pounds a year or two back, and it motivated me, and I won some money.
-
What do you hope to accomplish with it?
-
That's probably the biggest benefit of logging for me. It makes me constantly ask myself if the food I'm eating is tasty and filling enough to warrant the calories it's costing me, and whether there's anything lower calories that would be more tasty or filling. There often is. It makes cake/candy/cookies/brownies not worth…

That may be a vast overestimate for some people. Even if I run as fast as I can for 30 minutes it will only burn maybe 350 calories max.

I find reviewing the success stories forum here and looking at before and after pictures really motivational and inspiring for me, more than anything else. Everybody looks so much happier and better in the after pictures.
-
Motivation is a great way to start, but be thinking about how you're going to do what you need to do and be consistent even on those days you don't wake up with motivation. Establish habits.
-
Thank you for your thoughts - they're very helpful. It sounds like in the past I've gotten off track by focusing a loton trying to meet calorie or health goals on vacation or over a holiday rather than putting most of my energy into getting back on track. That's something I can do differently this time.
-
Success stories and pictures tend to build my motivation. Go look at some of those threads. Almost everyone looks so much younger, better, and happier closer to their goal weight.

Susan Albers "Eating Mindfully" is probably my favorite book on the topic: a.co/ixqgdr2 "Mindful Eating Awareness" is a close second, though: a.co/fZL54Fo

I enjoy this thread and I'm bumping it to encourage more contributions!!

Hi! I still reread and refer back to the book. The techniques are really useful. Also their book "The Diet Trap Solution" - highly recommended.
-
I love seeing side by sides! So inspiring to see the progress!

You guys, I'm so glad I started this thread! You all look so amazing! It's great to see how vital, energetic, and (if I may say this in a way that isn't creepy) sexy you all look at 40+! I'm getting back on the wagon after an injury 18 months ago and my weight creeping back up. It really motivates me to see what one can…

I think sometimes when people start their body has so many calories banked that it doesn't get that hungry when you have a few low calorie days. In my experience, that won't last.
-
You look amazing! That's really inspiring. Thank you for sharing.

One thing I struggle with is tricking myself into thinking that "Oh, I must be a little hungry ... I should probably have a few bites more" when really I'm not and just want an excuse to eat. Data could help me address that, I think. And, okay, I'll admit - I'm also a science and data junkie and I'm kind of interested in…

I'm trying to understand when my body is actually hungry with the theory that I can rely on those signals to maintain a healthy weight in maintenance.
-
You must have a much better grasp of when you're actually physically hungry than I do then.
-
What do you think is the difference that makes it feel easy to some people, and so torturous, maddeningly difficult for others? Is it that the "easy" people are trying to maintain a more natural weight and the others are striving for something that is difficult for them to maintain? Or something else?

I really like the Gillian Riley book "Eating Less" as an approach to managing your addictive desire for sugar.
-
I've realized that I have a broken feedback mechanism for telling me when to eat or stop eating, and I'm always going to have to use external tools to manage that. I like how The Hacker's Diet puts it: "Let's try to understand why so many people fail to keep weight off after struggling to lose it. The rubber bag tells us…

I'm pretty good about working out, but I'm the queen of bad excuses for overeating - "I'll just eat a little bit extra and make up for it later," "It's silly to just leave a little bit on the plate!," "But I never get to eat those oatmeal raisin cookies - I should eat all I can now!,"
