I feel like "eating breakfast" comes up in the weight control registry because it's a marker of people who didn't overeat dinner the night before. They're more likely to be hungry and ready for breakfast.

Pick out a strategy you think might work for maintaining without counting calories and try it. But monitor your weight closely and consistently and commit that if it creeps up a certain number of pounds (3 lbs? 5 lbs?) you will start counting calories again religiously until it gets back down to the lower end of your…

Do you know if you have a diastasis of the abdominal muscles? For many women, the abdominal muscles separate excessively during pregnancy and you would probably need a tummy tuck to fix that.

As the American Academy of Pediatrics, a vegan or vegetarian diet can be appropriate for children of all ages. Anybody who is stupid enough to not do the work to ensure their child is getting adequately nourished is not going to do better if you just demand they add eggs or meat to the diet. There are plenty of children…

I've been meditating daily since the beginning of the year, and it's changed my life too. It's a very valuable adjunct to changing your diet and lifestyle to be healthier.

I am planning on living to my mid nineties or better in good health. I take good care of myself, maintain a healthy weight, eat a whole foods plant based diet, exercise. My mother passed away at 84, but did not take good care of herself (bad diet, smoker, no exercise), and my father is 87 and in great health, so I think…

I consider myself whole foods plant based and try to follow a Dr. Fuhrman-style diet for 80%-90% of my calories. That means to me that 80-90% of my calories usually come from raw and cooked vegetables and fruits, nuts, beans, and whole unprocessed grains. The other 10-20% of my diet comes from dairy, eggs, and a little…

Dr Greger on NutritionFacts.org is a great science-based resource that presents the facts behind a WFPB diet: nutritionfacts.org/video/food-as-medicine/

There's a difference between a "plant-based diet" and a "whole foods plant-based diet." A plant-based diet is just a mostly vegan diet - one that gets the vast majority of calories from plant foods, and also includes processed plant foods (flour, processed oils, sugar). A whole foods plant-based diet (WFPB) is the one that…

For me, I had to make a hard rule that I do not eat free food given away at the office. It's easier for me to just not eat it at all than to try to fit it in to my calorie allotment and have to think about the temptation to keep eating every day. I tell myself that if I really, really want that cookie, brownie, etc. then I…

Breakfast is not mandatory. However, for me I find that when I'm not hungry for breakfast, it means my dinners are too big. For other people, skipping breakfast means they eat too big of a lunch. So, just look at your own habits and make sure that skipping breakfast isn't causing or a sign of other areas you may need to…

Are you hungry when you get the headache? For many people a headache is a sign of letting themselves get a little too hungry

Mindful eating is supposed to give you the time and space in your brain to make better decisions in alignment with your long term goals around food. It doesn't mean you have to use that space that way - it's totally possible to continue to choose to overeat.
-
This is perfect - I need to have it tattooed on my brain. Food is primarily fuel, and within that main goal, balance nutrition and taste. That's it in a nutshell.

This is absolutely not true. Eating more calories than your body is burning is what makes you fat, whether those calories are from carbs or fat. There are plenty of very skinny people who eat a ton of carbs (and burn them off) and plenty of fat people who eat nearly none. I also don't have a lot of trust that a guy who has…

You have to look at this as unwiring your bad eating habits and wiring new, better habits. It can take a long time and require a lot of repetition. There are tools (planning/logging) you may have to use forever. Accept that. Figure out what tools and habits help you maintain a healthy weight. Practice them every day.…

Yes ... but I just guesstimate raw veggies. I don't measure or weigh them. I eyeball the amounts. They are so low cal that if I'm plus or minus a bit, it won't impact things.

Here's my thoughts/experience: Compulsive overeating is a bad habit. We can form compulsive habits from anything that gives us a dopamine spike (shopping, gambling, etc.) Overeating food in general provides a dopamine spike, so it can be compulsive habit forming. Sugar-bearing foods for many/most people cause a stronger…

I absolutely struggle with this too. Three books are really helping me get better, though I'm not 100% there yet: 1. The Beck Diet Solution by Judith Beck - teaches to use CBT techniques to overcome overeating 2. Eating Mindfully by Susan Albers - teaches mindful eating 3. Brain Over Binge by Kathryn Hansen - teaches…

This is pretty much where I'm at. 5'5", 136 lbs. My original goal was 125-130, but I'm not sure I'm willing to cut back more at this point. I'm not 100% at acceptance with that, but I'm finding that my brain is reluctant to try to lose more.

This is excellent! "This is something I've witnessed regularly in my own practice. Looking to my experiences working with thousands of patients over the course of the past dozen years, it's clear that liking the life you're living while you're losing weight is the key to keeping it off." "So what does that goal post look…

You have to add "weight training" as a cardio exercise to get it to increase calories burned.

There are a fair number of people sensitive to fructose who have IBS, and fruit will cause bloating for them. Otherwise, not generally. I eat several pieces of fruit a day.
